Job Description

AECOM is seeking a BHS (Baggage Handling Systems) Design Manager, Airport Terminal Revitalization to join our team. This position is based on-site, out of Mississauga. We are seeking professionals to join our team to help us build one of the most advanced, sustainable and passenger-friendly airports in the world.

Major Responsibilities

  • Leads the implementation of multi-disciplinary design standards, with a primary focus on the BHS scope, while coordinating closely with the main contractor.
  • Ensures BHS design and construction comply with all technical requirements, including design reviews, submittal assessments, and testing/commissioning processes.
  • Reviews and evaluates alternative technical proposals from the contractor, assessing feasibility and alignment with project requirements.
  • Oversees technical aspects of BHS design, ensuring seamless coordination across design disciplines, contractors, stakeholders, and government agencies.
  • Manages pre-construction phase activities, including planning, design development, site preparation, permitting, and procurement, with a strong emphasis on BHS scope.
  • Serves as the primary client interface across multiple levels and project phases, providing technical guidance and subject matter expertise in BHS design development.
  • Oversees BHS and other design consultancy agreements to ensure compliance with contract specifications, project timelines, and budgetary constraints.
  • Leads design reviews, gathering stakeholder input and facilitating timely, effective feedback integration.
  • Coordinates BHS reviews with external stakeholders, including airlines, regulatory agencies, and authorities having jurisdiction.
  • Delivers executive-level progress and performance reports, highlighting key risks and opportunities related to the BHS scope.
  • Manages client review and approval processes across all design phases, ensuring a seamless transition from Development to Construction.
  • Provides technical support to delivery teams, leveraging expertise in BHS planning and design to align with the client’s facility requirements throughout project execution.
  • Conducts and oversees quality reviews to ensure compliance with BHS scope and broader program requirements.

Qualifications

University Degree in Engineering or Architecture + 8 years of experience in large capital programs in an engineering / design management position with focus on BHS. This position is for a newly created position.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Relevant professional designation is considered an asset.
  • Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of professional experience.
  • Specialized experience in the design management of technology systems, including Building Management Systems (BMS), Life Safety Systems, Power Monitoring Systems, Passenger Boarding Bridges, Automated People Movers, and other building technology infrastructure.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and Revit; experience with MicroStation, Civil 3D, and BIM software is considered an asset. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Proven ability to conduct comprehensive design reviews and effectively lead design coordination activities.
  • Solid understanding of program development processes, including scope definition, cost estimation, scheduling, and risk analysis.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with a demonstrated ability to lead meetings and workshops with diverse and large stakeholder groups.
  • Strong technical expertise across all phases of project development, with a track record of solving complex challenges through data analysis and informed decision-making.
  • Demonstrated experience managing senior stakeholder relationships and delivering high-level strategic reporting to support effective executive decision-making.

This position requires work on-site/out of the office 5 days a week.
