Registered Midwife
We provide primary health care through a range of options including prevention, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. Our interprofessional teams include health professionals, educators and support workers representing both traditional Indigenous and contemporary models of care. Also, use of wholistic healthcare that addresses the heart, mind, spirit, and body. A Midwife is a primary health care provider who possesses the knowledge, skills, and competencies to provide care to women, birthing people, infants, and families throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period. The Midwife adheres to the philosophy of midwifery care and works collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team to support culturally safe, client-centered care.
WNHAC's Indigenous Midwifery Program currently provides prenatal and postpartum care to families within its service region that includes clinic-based, outreach, and community-based services. While the program does not currently provide intrapartum (labour and birth) care, WNHAC is actively working to expand local birthing options for Indigenous families. The successful candidate will play an important role in supporting the growth and future development of Indigenous midwifery services in the region.
NOTE: Traditional practices involve cultural ceremonies and burning sacred medicines including tobacco, sweetgrass, sage and cedar within the work setting.
Primary Duties / Responsibilities
- Facilitate client access to wholistic prenatal care that meets individual needs by carrying out screening tests, and postnatal visits including ordering and following up on diagnostic tests and procedures and referring to other providers as appropriate.
- Coordinate and monitor health care plans to ensure optimum health is achieved and maintained. Providing support and counselling to mothers following events like miscarriage, stillbirth and neonatal abnormality
- Consult and refer within the interprofessional team and to traditional healers, physicians and specialists as needed.
- Provide assistance to communities in development of strategies/programs to promote health and prevent disease.
- Maintain current and accurate medical records and reports to ensure comprehensive,
- Consistent care and services, and to meet all accountability requirements.
- Active participation in organizational teams and committee
- Other duties as required. In extenuating situations or in the event of an emergency, may be redeployed to ensure provision of essential services.
Qualifications
- Current active practicing registration or eligible for licensure with the College of Ontario Midwives or an active Indigenous Exemption Midwife
- Graduate of an educational program approved by the College of Ontario Midwives
- Current certification in CPR, NRP and Emergency skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Experience working in an Anishinaabe organization and ability to understand and speak Anishinaabemowin a definite asset
- Willingness and ability to travel
- Current criminal/vulnerable persons records check
- Commitment to ongoing training and professional development relevant to job requirements
- Proof of immunization in compliance with policy requirements is mandatory
- Positive attitude and capacity to act as a healthy lifestyle role model
LOCATION
This position is based in Kenora, Ontario, situated on the breathtaking shores of Lake of the Woods, known for its stunning natural beauty, Kenora offers an exceptional quality of life with access to world-class fishing, boating, hiking, camping, and outdoor recreation year-round. Residents enjoy a strong sense of community, vibrant Indigenous culture, and the opportunity to live and work in one of Northwestern Ontario's most beautiful regions.
Working Conditions
- Regular work schedule is Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Primary responsibilities currently focus on prenatal and postpartum care, including assessments, education, care planning, and follow-up support for families.
- Services are delivered through both clinic-based appointments in Kenora and outreach visits to surrounding First Nations communities.
- Weekly travel to the surrounding communities is required.
- Opportunities to participate in community events, cultural activities, and health promotion initiatives.
- Flexibility may be required to meet client care needs and support future program expansion.
- Options for temporary accommodation available.
Future Vision Statement
WNHAC's Indigenous Midwifery Program is actively working toward expanding local birthing services and implementing an on-call midwifery model in the future. While the current position follows regular weekday hours, the ability and willingness to participate in future on-call responsibilities and evolving models of care will be considered a significant asset.
Salary: $108,682-141,805 with excellent benefits, including HOOPP pension plan. Salary is based on education and experience.
