Job Summary

Provide technical support for diagnostic laboratory testing and specimen management. Perform routine specimen collection, processing, and documentation while adhering to laboratory safety and quality standards.

Main Duties

• Collect patient specimens using venipuncture, capillary puncture, urine collection, and other approved methods while verifying patient identity and labels.
• Process, prepare and aliquot specimens for testing, centrifuge samples, and prepare slides or media as required.
• Operate, calibrate and perform routine maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment according to standard operating procedures.
• Perform quality control checks, document results, and report any discrepancies to supervisory staff.
• Enter and maintain accurate specimen and test information in laboratory information systems and paper records.
• Adhere to infection prevention and control practices, handle biohazardous materials safely, and maintain a clean work environment.

Requirements

• Completion of a recognized medical laboratory assistant program, clinical laboratory technician program, or equivalent post-secondary education.
• Demonstrated experience in specimen collection and processing in a clinical laboratory or healthcare setting.
• Competence in phlebotomy and safe handling of biological specimens.
• Working knowledge of laboratory procedures, quality control practices, and infection prevention protocols.
• Proficiency with basic computer applications and laboratory information systems for data entry and record keeping.
• Ability to follow protocols, maintain attention to detail under time constraints, and perform physical tasks such as standing for periods and handling specimens.
