The Lethbridge Police Service is seeking to hire one (1) or more full-time permanent Community Peace Officers with offsite training to commence for successfully hired applicants in approximately August 2026.
The LPS has developed a very unique to Alberta, Community Peace Officer (CPO) program. The vision of the LPS is guided by the highest standards of public safety, we are committed to supporting our community by addressing crime, maintaining public safety and strengthening public trust. CPO’s will help further our vision by enhancing community perceptions of safety and increasing our capacity to continue to respond efficiently and effectively to calls for service.
Lethbridge Police Service CPOs are particularly unique in Alberta due to their enhanced authority to initiate and conduct criminal investigations involving theft and mischief where the value of the property does not exceed five thousand dollars. Community Peace Officers employed throughout the Province of Alberta are appointed under the Peace Officer Act. Within Lethbridge, CPOs are accountable to the City of Lethbridge, Lethbridge Police Service and the Provincial Director of Law Enforcement to execute their assigned duties.
Reporting to the Community Peace Officer Sergeant, the role of a Community Peace Officer is to assist with public contact and support public safety within the community.
Hours of Work: Shift work including a rotation of days, evenings, nights, weekends;
Starting Job Rate: $41.99 per hour |2026 Rate
Full Job Rate: $46.67 per hour |2026 Rate (After completion of 18-month probation period)
This permanent full-time position falls under the protection of a collective agreement associated to the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 70 contract. CUPE Local 70 represents employees who are employed in number of civic departments within the City of Lethbridge.
As a Community Peace Officer, you will:
- Conduct foot and vehicle patrol to monitor and maintain public and traffic safety within the scope of their authorities. This includes observing people, vehicles, property and areas for indications of criminal activity etc.
- Respond to calls for service, initiate and conduct criminal investigations involving theft and mischief where the value of the property does not exceed five thousand dollars
- Obtaining statements from complainants, victims and witnesses, collecting of, and ensuring chain of custody of exhibits for investigations within their designated scope of authority
- Execute Warrants, confirming proper release procedures are followed
- Prepare case files in relation to criminal charges or warrant applications related to enhanced authorities ensuring they meet LPS report writing standards for Pre-charge Approval and Provincial Court.
- Control, assess and mediate during situations at disturbances and complaints, including calming down/reasoning with people, determining infractions and course of action and restoring order
- Contribute to public safety by providing education and enforcement of Provincial Acts which are listed on the Community Peace Officer Appointment.
- Assist victims, including referring them to appropriate agencies and resources
- Be a presence in the downtown core of Lethbridge, engaging with citizens and members of the business community, providing information, promoting public safety and building relationships.
- Enforce traffic regulations including but not limited to identifying violations/using laser/radar, signaling violators to stop, directing traffic and aiding motorists, as well as issuing summonses, appearance notices and roadside suspensions
- Prepare for and attend court (court preparation/brief, liaising with prosecutor, testifying, etc.)
- Assist Commissionaires and Duty Staff Sergeant in monitoring prisoners within the short-term holding facility including, ensuring meals are provided as required and medical needs are addressed
- Prepare Judicial Interim Release Hearing packages, forwarding them to the hearing office and providing prisoners with access to their bail hearings
- Consult and liaise with residents, community groups, businesses and other employees to share information, identify problem areas, analyze problems, prepare and implement action plans
- Provide supportive role when requested by police officers in areas such as traffic direction, perimeter or residence security, controlling barricades, investigative support within their mandate
- Enforce City of Lethbridge bylaws to maintain the health, safety, and wellness of the community
- Other miscellaneous duties relating to public safety or to the short-term holding facility as assigned by the CPO Sergeant or by the Duty Staff Sergeant.
AS THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE YOU WILL HAVE:
- Minimum 18 years of age
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- No Criminal Record or Pardon (if applicable)
- Intermediate computer skills and abilities (regular use of hardware and software applications etc.) including proficiency with Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Outlook)
- A valid AB Class 5 driver’s license (Maximum of 5 Demerits)
- Currently a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
- Exceptional ability to display mature and sound judgement in deciding appropriate course of action, including the ability to stay calm in stressful situations.
- Strong interpersonal skills including tact and diplomacy with an emphasis on customer service
- Strong problem solving and multi-tasking ability
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work independently and in a team while putting others first, respecting the opinions of others and being open to feedback
- Ability to work unsupervised, demonstrate initiative within your role, demonstrating courage in difficult situations and asking for help when you need it

The successful candidate is required to consent to a police security clearance, which includes the voluntary completion and submission of a personal disclosure form (lifestyle questionnaire), criminal and police records check, reference checks and truth verification through polygraph examination.
STEPS OF HIRING PROCESS
All components of the selection process will be administered, scored, evaluated and interpreted in a fair and uniform manner. The duration of the hiring and selection process once the posting has closed should be approximately three to four months. In addition to meeting the requirements of each stage of our CPO hiring process outlined below, applications will be assessed at each hiring stage based on organizational fit and overall competitiveness.

- After the application package is reviewed by the recruiting officer to verify completeness of required documentation, competitive applicants will be contacted to arrange for PARE testing. PARE testing will be arranged by the Lethbridge Police Service.
- Completion of the PARE physical abilities testing (or equivalent) in under 4 minutes and 45 seconds and security clearance at the level of Verified Reliable are prerequisites for this position.
- PARE MEDICAL AND CONSENT FORM (Must be completed and submitted to Lethbridge Polytechnic by email prior to testing)
- After successful completion of PARE testing, applicants will be contacted to arrange for a one-on one Personal Disclosure interview.
- Applicants who are still competitive after the one-on one Personal Disclosure interview, will be asked to complete a written skills assessment.
- The Panel Interview is given to candidates who are still competitive after the written skills assessment.
- Successful candidates at the Panel Interview Stage will move onto the next stages of the process
- The Polygraph Assessment will be scheduled (Integrity and Truth verification through Polygraph)
- Security Clearance and Background checks will be conducted
- Successful candidate(s) will be selected and given an offer to attend CPOIP (Community Peace Officer Induction Program) training. *More Information on CPO Training is outlined below*
TRAINING
- Tentative start date in August 2026
- Applicants must be able to attend approximately 12 weeks of Level I CPOIP training at the Lac La Biche Alberta County Law Enforcement Training Program (Mid August through early November 2026). Candidates required to attend Level I CPO training will be sponsored by the Lethbridge Police Service and will be provided with the following:
- Accommodation/lodging is provided in Lac La Biche
- Cadets will be paid a Stipend while in training ($1200 per week)
- Upon successful completion of Level I CPO training, cadets will receive an additional five to six weeks of in-house CPO training at the Lethbridge Police Service (November through December 2026), while also being paid by Stipend.
- Formal permanent full-time employment with LPS/City of Lethbridge will only be offered to cadets who not only pass the required training courses listed above, but also exhibit the core values of the Lethbridge Police Service throughout the hiring process.
- Upon successful completion of the Lac La Biche CPOIP training program followed by approximately 6 weeks of in-house LPS CPO training, the candidate(s) will be given a full-time permanent offer of employment with the Lethbridge Police Service as a Class 2 - Community Peace Officer subject to a probationary period. After the successful completion of the 18-month probationary period, the candidate will move to a Class 1- Community Peace Officer and receive the corresponding rate of pay.
