This position provides an opportunity for graduate students to gain practical experience in basic and translational cancer genomics research at the BC Cancer Research Institute. The role is intended for individuals enrolled in a graduate-level program and looking to build applied research skills in computational biology.
Key Responsibilities
- Support research studies focused on improving understanding of cancer biology through high-throughput multiomic analysis.
- Conduct literature reviews and summarize relevant findings.
- Perform large-scale informatic analyses of high-throughput multiomic data.
- May contribute to the development of new bioinformatics tools.
- Meet regularly with the Principal Investigator, Dr. Adi Steif, to provide progress updates and adjust research directions.
- Communicate study progress and findings to the research team, collaborators, and the broader scientific community.
- May contribute to the preparation of scientific manuscripts, ethics applications and research grants.
- Participate in lab meetings and project-specific meetings, providing feedback, sharing code, and assisting other members of the lab as needed.
- Be aware of and follow all graduate program requirements to ensure continued progress through the degree program, including course requirements, participation in graduate program research days, thesis committee meetings, the PhD comprehensive examination (if applicable), thesis defense, and graduation.
Qualifications
- Enrollment in a graduate-level program (e.g. MSc, PhD) in Bioinformatics, Genome Science and Technology, Medical Genetics or a related discipline.
- Strong interpersonal as well as written and oral communication skills.
- Experience with statistics and computer programming in Python or R is an asset.
- Experience with high-performance cluster computing and Bash is an asset.
- Knowledge of molecular genetics and cancer biology is an asset.
- Prior research experience in bioinformatics, cancer genomics, or a closely related discipline is an asset.
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and a willingness to learn.
- Ability to manage changing priorities and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism and systemic racism on Indigenous Peoples within social and health contexts. This includes understanding how these factors contribute to current health disparities and barriers to care. Show a clear commitment to identifying, challenging, and eradicating Indigenous-specific racism and all forms of discrimination impacting equity-deserving groups within health care settings. This involves familiarity and understanding Indigenous Cultural Safety and Humility recognizing personal biases, institutional barriers, engaging in anti-racism education and training and advocating for systemic change.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments within BC Cancer's contexts found in the foundational documents including Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study - BC Human Rights Code, BC Anti-racism Act and how they intersect across the health care system.
This role offers a practical opportunity to contribute to basic and translational cancer research within a collaborative healthcare research environment.

- Brings an understanding of the Indigenous specific racism and the broader systemic racism that exists in the colonial health care structure, and has demonstrated initiatives in breaking down barriers and ensuring a safe environment ensuring a sense of belonging to all and informed by Indigenous Cultural Safety.
- Awareness of social, economic, political and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments

Job Type: Casual
Hourly Wage: The hourly wage for this position would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate’s relevant education and experience and would be in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan. Salary will be prorated accordingly for part time roles.
