Articling Student
$65.5k per yearEngineers and Geoscientists BC
Engineers and Geoscientists BC is currently searching for an Articling Student to join our team starting in September 2027.
As a modern regulator operating under the Professional Governance Act, S.B.C. 2018, c. 47, Engineers and Geoscientists BC plays a critical role in protecting the public interest by overseeing the safe and ethical practice of professional engineering and geoscience in British Columbia.
The Articling Student position offers a unique experience by providing hands-on exposure to professional governance, regulatory decision-making, investigations, and discipline processes, while developing a strong foundation in administrative law principles, procedural fairness, and statutory interpretation. The work is challenging and rewarding and we have high expectations regarding work quality and attention to detail. We expect hard work from you during the day, but strive to support healthy work-life balance for all our employees. Students have gone on to a variety of positions after articling, including positions with regulatory bodies, government, and in private practice.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
Analyzing and advising on issues related to the Professional Governance Act.
Conducting legal research into policy, privacy, and governance issues and preparing legal memoranda, changes to our bylaws, presentations and reports.
Assisting with the investigation and discipline of registrants of Engineers and Geoscientists BC, participating in the drafting and negotiation of Consent Orders, assisting with disciplinary hearings, compliance with discipline orders, and privacy matters.
Assisting with files related to unauthorized practice and misuse of title by non-registrants and any associated court applications.
Assisting with occasional issues concerning external organizations such as the Ombudsperson, the Human Rights Tribunal and the courts.
The principal for the articling student will be the Manager, Legal Counsel Policy, however the student will have broad tasks that support the entire organization. During the articling period, the Articling Student will be given training in ethics, practice management and lawyering skills (including research, writing, drafting, advocacy, negotiation and/or mediation, interviewing, and problem solving) as required by the Law Society of British Columbia’s articling skills and practice checklist.
It is expected that the Articling Student will be exposed to a number of different practice areas including administrative law, contract law, and privacy law. Opportunities in other areas, such as civil litigation, may also arise.
WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE
The successful candidate will have an undergraduate law degree with excellent grades and immediate eligibility for enrollment in the articling program of the Law Society of British Columbia. Candidates should also have an interest in administrative law, contract law, civil litigation, and privacy law.
WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU
Each member of our team contributes to public safety in BC and helps us deliver on our vision of “modern regulation for a resilient world.” We serve the public as an inclusive, progressive, and future-focused regulator. Our Strategic Plan also places priority on our role to advance climate action, foster equity, diversity and inclusion, and move towards reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. At Engineers and Geoscientists BC, we are committed to demonstrating our values of collaboration, excellence, integrity, and innovation.
This role offers a competitive compensation and benefits program including a salary of $65,500 annually and payment for the Law Society of BC’s bar admission program. For this position starting in September 2027, we expect students to have completed the June 2027 Accelerated PREP session.
For contract employees on a short-term contract, we offer:
8% additional pay in lieu of benefits.
10 vacation days per annum (pro-rated based on the length of contract).
A flex day program offering additional paid days off (usually alternating Fridays) as a result of a compressed work week.
A hybrid work model with an assigned schedule confirming days worked remotely and days worked in-office. This role will be required to work in-office a minimum of 2 days per week during regular business operations.
The required tools, equipment, and technology for employees to work remotely are provided.
Free parking available at the office. Transit reimbursement is offered to employees who take transit to work; we are centrally located near bus and Skytrain stops.
