Agricultural Research Technician

Perennia's mission is to support growth, transformation and economic development in Nova Scotia's agriculture, seafood, and food and beverage sectors. To assist in this effort, we are seeking a full-time Agricultural Research Technician based out of our Kentville office and responsible for working on projects province-wide, so travel will be expected.

This position will work as part of our fast-paced and diverse Field Research Team. This team is responsible for managing several applied research trials and works closely with our production specialists in the Agricultural Services Team to manage on-farm research projects that are designed to increase efficiency, promote environmental stewardship, and demonstrate innovative practices on farm. In addition to field research trial responsibilities, this role will be involved in writing proposals, data analysis, and reporting on projects, as well as assisting specialists with outreach activities such as hosting field days, developing fact sheets, etc. We operate on a team-based approach, where being able to work on an interdisciplinary team and take initiative is required to ensure the highest quality of work is always done.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct and oversee agriculture research trials (planting, spraying, maintaining, evaluating, and harvesting)
  • Operate large scale and plot size field equipment
  • Accurately collect, manage, and analyze research data (using A.R.M.)
  • Maintain, transport, and operate research equipment. General equipment repair and maintenance includes sourcing, purchasing, and acquisition of supplies, parts, and services
  • Install and maintain in-field monitoring sensors and equipment
  • Perform literature searches and assist with written documents, including project proposals and reports, factsheets, blog posts, etc.
  • Assist in training of student employees
  • Assist with outreach activities, including tours at key demonstration sites

To excel at this position, the successful applicant will have:

  • Minimum Diploma or Degree in Agronomy, Agribusiness, Agricultural Mechanization, or equiva- lent experience
  • Two or more years of experience in an agriculture-related role. Specific experience with fruit, vege-table, and field crops is desirable
  • A team-based approach, able to work on an interdisciplinary team and take initiative, as required, to ensure the highest quality of work is always done
  • A basic understanding of agronomic practices
  • Technical and operational competency with agricultural equipment
  • Demonstrated ability to balance and prioritize multiple projects and tasks
  • Excellent attention todetail
  • Strong organization and time management skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience supervising field staff preferred
  • Capable of lifting 20 kg
  • Adaptable to various work environments, including field, laboratory, and office
  • Valid driver's licence and access to a vehicle
  • Possess or willing to attain a pesticide applicators license
  • A member or eligible for P.Ag. status with the Nova Scotia Institute of Agrology
