Layout Environment Technical Director

Wētā FX is looking for experienced Layout Technical Directors to join our Layout team, working on high end feature film and VFX projects.

Layout artists determine the position of the CG camera and block CG characters for shots of a VFX sequence, in addition to creating the CG environment from assets provided by Models. Layout artists consider a shot’s framing, composition, camera angle, camera path and movement, and the lighting requirements of each scene.

We are keen to hear from Layout TDs and Artists who are open to shorter, show based contracts. These roles are expected to sit around six months in length, aligned to current production needs, with potential extension opportunities on upcoming shows.

This role will be performed onsite at Wētā FX’s Wellington hub. Ideally, you will already be based in Vancouver or be open to relocating, eligible to work in Canada, and available to start as soon as possible.

This role suits mid level to senior Layout TDs and Artists who enjoy both the creative and technical sides of layout work.

What You Will Be Doing

You will produce layouts for shots and sequences, resolving previs, mocap, matchmove and plate photography into a consistent world space. This includes:

• Building and maintaining shot and sequence continuity
• Creating and publishing cameras for Animation and Lighting
• Blocking scenes using existing assets and low poly geometry
• Supporting shot setup with the right assets, dressing and scene structure
• Collaborating closely with Production, Animation, FX and Lighting teams

What We Are Looking For

• Production experience with procedural environment building
• Generalist Maya skills with camera, modelling, animation and rendering
• Comprehension of photographic composition and an understanding of camera lenses
• Ability to match photographic reference of an environment, natural or architectural, with a minimum of assets
• Strong technical, communication and organisational skills
• A solid understanding of matchmove concepts
• Knowledge of Nuke, Katana, and scripting abilities in Python is a plus
• At least 3 years Layout experience in Visual Effects on feature films

Rate expectations for this position: $37 – $56 CAD per hour, depending on skill set and experience, based on a 40-hour work week. The amount of hours scheduled per week may vary based on role and business needs. The rate offered will take into account an individual's job-related knowledge, skills and experience, among other factors.
