Overview
This position involves evaluating existing buildings and design solutions to our clients' complex and unique problems. Projects can be a mix of residential, multi‑family and commercial, with an emphasis on fire, wind, flood and impact damage repair, the adaptive reuse of older buildings and upgrading existing facilities to accommodate changes in use and the introduction of equipment and machinery.
The Principal Consultant - Building Science will be responsible for the assessment and refurbishment/renovation of existing residential, commercial and industrial building structures and building envelope systems. The successful candidate will be comfortable communicating with clients and contractors and working on active building sites. A commitment to providing practical and creative solutions is essential. The candidate will be a dedicated and inquisitive worker who takes on responsibility quickly and easily. To be successful in this role, this individual must be a team player with the ability to work independently with minimal direction. This role is also responsible for promoting the company’s expert services and securing new business for Rimkus and is critical for servicing and maintaining accounts with existing clients while increasing the firm’s presence in the local market.
The Salary Range for this position is $124,900 - $187,300 and is dependent on education, experience, location and certifications/licensure.
Main Responsibilities
Technical Responsibilities
- Supervise and train junior staff, manage group production.
- Coordinate with other engineering and architectural disciplines.
- Manage projects and assist clients at all stages, from design to construction and contract administration.
- Provide technical support and oversee the review of completed work prior to delivery to the client.
- Carry out on-site surveys and assessments of building structures and envelopes.
- Develop rehabilitation programs and recommend project concepts.
- Design and analyze building components and systems.
- Prepare reports, studies, drawings and quotes for renovation and refurbishment work.
- Market and request projects from new and existing clients.
- Collect data to prepare studies and reports for capital expenditure projects.
- Investigate and diagnose building problems.
- Ensure site quality, project management and contract administration.
- Liaise with clients, contractors and manufacturers.
- Provide technical support and oversee the review of completed work prior to delivery to the client.
- Prepare and monitor project proposals and quotations and ensure deadlines are met.
Business Development
- Contribute to the sales and marketing plan, identifying and managing client relationships.
- Identify and pursue prospective clients leveraging internal and external resources to develop new relationships and opportunities.
- Sells the company’s services to prospective clients (i.e. corporate and commercial clients, municipalities, government agencies, building owners, developers, etc.) to secure new client accounts, deeper client penetration, and repeat business.
- Reinforces relationships with current clients through regular contact and promotion of value‑added services for future business.
Qualifications and Experience
Education
- Degree in civil or building engineering from an accredited university.
- Professional engineer (P.Eng.) designation in any of the Atlantic Canada provinces as a minimum, additional/multiple provinces are an asset.
Work Experience
- At least 10 years of experience in building engineering and structural restoration.
- Experience in managing teams and training junior staff.
- Professional‑level experience in consultative sales, business development, client relationship management, or account management.
- Experience in a consulting engineering firm is an asset.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation are required.

Physical Demands, Overtime, and Travel Requirements
- Physical Demands – Work is performed both in an office setting and at outside locations (i.e. industrial, construction and/or residential sites). The employee is frequently required to stand, walk on sloped and flat roofs, sit, climb ladders, bend, climb inside attics, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, hear, and drive a motor vehicle to client sites or job sites. Working at heights, including accessing buildings by ladders, swing stages, and mechanical lifts will be necessary. The employee may lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Clear vision and depth perception are also necessary. The employee must be sharp, focused, and alert when conducting inspections, speaking, and interacting with clients, preparing drawings and written reports.
- Overtime – There will be some occasions where overtime (or working after normal business hours) will be required to meet the demands of the position.
- Travel – This position requires up to 30% local area travel. Some out‑of‑area and overnight travel may be required.
