Senior Credit Risk Analyst

Commerce moves fast and risk patterns evolve quickly, so curiosity, sound judgment, speed, and accuracy matter.As a Senior Credit Risk Analyst, you'll own complex and high-impact investigations, make defensible mitigation decisions, and help evolve the policies, detection models, and tools Shopify uses to manage risk at scale. You'll bring deep domain expertise and partner with Product, Engineering, and Data to protect Shopify while supporting a low-friction merchant experience.Key Responsibilities
Review and investigate complex merchant accounts by analyzing business, transaction, fulfillment, and chargeback activity, then make appropriate mitigation decisionsOwn escalated investigations for high-value and high-visibility merchantsCommunicate directly with merchants to gather information, address concerns, and explain decisionsMonitor portfolio trends and assess how business models, seasonal patterns, and economic conditions affect merchant riskSurface merchant and risk insights and work with Product, Engineering, and Data to improve Shopify’s tools, processes, and detection rulesDevelop and improve credit risk policies, playbooks, and mitigation strategiesUse AI tools to detect threats faster and automate repetitive analysisShare expertise and support the team in producing consistently high-quality investigationsQualifications
5+ years of experience within financial services in a risk analysis or underwriting role within a digital payments, e-commerce, or marketplace environmentDeep knowledge of merchant credit risk and chargebacks, with the ability to connect multiple signals into a clear risk assessment and mitigation strategyExperience working with high-risk business models such as pre-sales, dropshipping, or subscriptionsSound judgment and ownership when making complex, high-impact decisions in ambiguous situationsClear written and verbal communication across technical and non-technical audiencesCuriosity about emerging risks, business models, and opportunities to improve team practicesProficiency with MS Excel, Google Sheets, or similar spreadsheet toolsA collaborative approach to sharing expertise, raising investigation quality, and influencing cross-functional partnersExperience collaborating cross-functionally to develop and deploy risk policies, mitigation strategies, or detection rules at scaleNice to have
