Role Overview

Strategic Planning (SP) at Highland Valley Copper (HVC) is responsible for ensuring the long-term (3+ year) value and resiliency of the operation. The Geology function within SP provides authoritative geological and resource knowledge across all four pits to ensure optimal extraction of value across the full mining value chain.

As Principal Resource Geologist, you are the technical authority and accountable owner of the HVC Mineral Resource Models. You provide oversight, assurance, and governance for resource model development, updates, and application, ensuring models are technically robust, auditable, fit-for-purpose, and consistently applied across Life of Asset (LOA) planning, reserves, mine planning, and strategic decision-making.

This role extends beyond model construction to include coordination and alignment with downstream users of the models—including planning, engineering, operations, metallurgy, and projects—to ensure correct interpretation, appropriate use, and clear communication of uncertainty and risk. You will set standards, define workflows and expectations, and ensure consistency in how resource models inform business decisions at HVC.

You are a recognized technical leader with deep expertise in geostatistics, estimation, and complex porphyry systems, combined with the judgment and influence required to guide high-impact decisions. You are expected to mentor senior practitioners, and influence across disciplines.

This position reports to the Chief Geologist - HVC, SP Geology, and is based in Vancouver, BC, with the option to work remotely up to two days per week. Regular travel to HVC is required (approximately 1 week every 4–6 weeks, with additional travel as business needs dictate).

Key Responsibilities

Safety & Leadership

• Act as a courageous and visible safety leader by actively promoting, endorsing, and role-modeling Teck’s safety, environmental, and sustainability values in all interactions and decisions
• Take proactive ownership of safety performance by identifying improvement opportunities, engaging stakeholders, and driving actions through to measurable outcomes
• Actively participate in safety conversations, field engagements, and risk assessments to reinforce a strong safety culture
• Embed safety, hazard awareness, and risk-based thinking into all geological modelling activities, workflows, and decision-support processes

T echnical Authority & Governance

• Serve as the technical authority for Mineral Resource Models at HVC, accountable for methodology selection, assumptions, validation, and model integrity
• Establish, maintain, and evolve standards, guidelines, and best practices for resource modelling, estimation, and classification at HVC
• Provide technical sign-off and assurance for resource models used in LOA planning, strategic studies, projects, and public disclosure.

Resource & Reserve Oversight

• Provide senior leadership and technical oversight of the annual Resource and Reserve (R&R) process, ensuring compliance with internal standards and external reporting codes
• Interface with Qualified Persons, auditors, and reviewers, addressing technical challenges and defending methodologies and outcomes

Cross-Functional Coordination & Model Use

• Lead engagement with mine planning, engineering, metallurgy, operations, and projects teams to ensure appropriate and consistent use of resource models
• Clearly communicate model assumptions, limitations, uncertainty, and risk to non-geologists to support informed business decisions
• Resolve technical misalignment between resource models and downstream applications

Geological Understanding & Model Evolution

• Maintain and continuously refine a deep understanding of the HVC mineral system and its spatial, geological, and metallurgical controls
• Oversee the integration of geology, structure, geochemistry, geophysics, geometallurgy, and production reconciliation into evolving models
• Guide decisions on model resolution, estimation approaches, and classification strategies aligned with business objectives

Innovation & Continuous Improvement

• Champion the adoption of advanced and fit-for-purpose modelling approaches, including rapid modelling workflows, conditional simulation, uncertainty analysis, and scenario evaluation
• Evaluate advanced modelling and planning techniques leading piloting and implementation where value is demonstrated

Strategic Programs & Advisory Role

• Provide senior technical input into the design and prioritization of resource confidence, geometallurgical, geotechnical, and expansion/exploration programs
• Act as a trusted advisor to Strategic Planning and site leadership on resource-related risks, opportunities, and trade-offs

Capability Building & Mentorship

• Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and coaching to senior and developing geoscientists across HVC and Teck
• Build organizational capability by sharing knowledge, reviewing work, and fostering a culture of inclusive technical excellence and rigor.

Qualifications

• Degree in Geoscience or a related discipline (e.g., geostatistics, geometallurgy, geochemistry). MSc or PhD strongly preferred; • Registered Professional Geoscientist (or eligible) with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia
• 12+ years of progressive experience in resource geology within mining operations, advanced projects, or applied research, including significant experience at a senior level;
• Demonstrated accountability for complex resource models supporting LOA planning, reserves, and strategic investment decisions
• Expert-level understanding of geostatistics, estimation theory, resource classification, and uncertainty management
• Advanced proficiency in 3D geological modelling and estimation software (Leapfrog GEO, EDGE required; Vulcan or equivalent an asset)
• Extensive experience with porphyry copper deposits and large, complex open pit operations
• Strong background in geochemistry and integrated multi-disciplinary data analysis across the mining value chain
• Advanced quantitative and analytical skills, including expert use of R, Python, ioGAS, or similar tools; experience applying data science or machine learning techniques to geological problems is an asset
• Proven ability to influence without authority and operate effectively across disciplines and organizational boundariesExceptional written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.

Pay Range: CAD $138,000 - $170,000 per year

The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
