About the Opportunity

Jastram Engineering Ltd. is looking for a full‑time Mechanical Design Technician or Engineer , based in North Vancouver, BC .

In this role, you will support the design and production of custom marine steering systems and components, reporting directly to the Engineering Manager. You will take projects from concept through to manufacturing and commissioning, applying mechanical, hydraulic, and electro‑hydraulic expertise while collaborating closely with production and service teams in a high‑mix, low‑volume manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design custom steering systems that align with customer specifications and JEL standards.
  • Complete 2D AutoCAD drawings and 3D SolidWorks models for manufacturability and cost efficiency.
  • Produce mechanical engineering calculations for stress, fatigue, thermal, pressure vessel, and material selection.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including system specs, operating guides, and assembly instructions.
  • Collaborate with production, machine shop staff, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure quality and feasibility.
  • Gather project requirements and coordinate timelines, milestones, and deliverables with internal partners.
  • Support system troubleshooting, commissioning, and customer service needs when required.
  • Ensure compliance with maritime regulations and communicate with classification and regulatory bodies.
  • Apply manufacturing engineering principles to improve efficiency, quality, and product performance.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement, process development, and cost‑reduction initiatives within engineering.
  • Work onsite within a paper‑heavy environment and adapt to JEL processes while driving future improvements.

Qualifications

To qualify, you will need a Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering degree (or a Technician diploma) and strong proficiency with 2D AutoCAD and 3D SolidWorks . A minimum of 10 years of experience in mechanical system design, drafting, and hands‑on manufacturing environments is essential.

Additional highly valued skills and background include:

  • Experience with casting, machining, and assembly processes.
  • A broad understanding of mechanical, electrical, and electro‑hydraulic systems.
  • Mechanical engineering calculations (stress, fatigue, thermal, material selection, pressure vessels).
  • Strong technical communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Working experience with Maritime Classification Societies.

About You

As our ideal candidate, you will possess problem‑solving skills, a hands‑on mechanical mindset, and the ability to determine how components fit and function together. You bring a practical, solutions‑oriented approach and the drive to streamline processes in a fast‑paced engineering environment.

This is a role for someone who loves to build, troubleshoot, and improve, whether you come from a marine, hydraulics, or niche mechanical background. If you’re looking for stability, long‑term growth, and the chance to become an expert in a specialized field where your work genuinely matters, this is where you’ll make your mark.
