Clinical Engineer-Practitioner Clinical Technologist

The Role

Medical equipment is used for medical treatment and diagnosis of patients in all areas of a hospital and beyond. Having fully functional and accurate medical equipment is essential for the safe diagnosis and treatment of patients, and it is the Medical Equipment Management service that is responsible for that equipment.

The Medical Equipment Management service is a team of highly trained clinical engineer technologists who are experts on medical equipment. We work across ten hospital sites in NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, managing the full life cycle of over 55,000 medical equipment devices, completing over 60,000 jobs per year.

You will work as part of a team of clinical engineer technologists based in the Surgical Team within the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

You will have a permanent contract with a working week that is Monday to Friday. Every day is different: one day you could be called to theatre to help with an equipment failure, the next day commissioning new medical equipment, and the following day performing planned maintenance in an out-patient clinic.

You will work with a wide range of medical devices including high and medium risk equipment, for example an infusion pump. You will undertake a 2-year competency-based training programme which will develop your skills to enable you to commission, calibrate, performance assure and repair a wide range of medical equipment.

All other roles will be assessed for sponsorship eligibility in line with current Home Office requirements. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) can only issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) where these are met.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

• Location based in Queen Elizabeth University Hospital
• Permanent Contract
• Full-time position (36 hours per week)
• Shift pattern for this post are Monday to Friday, 7.2 hours per day

Key Responsibilities

• Commissioning of medical devices: complete acceptance checking and installation of new medical devices to ensure devices are safe for staff and patients.
• Scheduled maintenance: carry out scheduled planned maintenance and quality assurance testing on medical devices using standard operating procedures and service manuals.
• Fault-finding and repair: carry out fault diagnosis on a broad range of medical devices using a planned and systematic approach making use diagnostic aids and test equipment. When required liaising with manufacturers and agents or seeking guidance from specialist staff.
• Decommissioning of medical devices: decommission medical devices following standard operating procedures.
• Electrical safety testing: visual inspection and electrical safety testing of equipment for compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act and Electricity at Work Regulations
• Safety alerts / field safety notices: complete jobs or actions that have been generated in response to a safety alert, safety notice, etc.
• Incident investigation: assist with technical equipment evaluation for medical devices involved in incidents
• Procurement: assist with the evaluation of new medical devices as part of a procurement evaluation
• Call logging: to accurate and timely log calls for service, determining the urgency of any request and referring requests for complex medical devices to specialist clinical technologists.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

We are looking for people that are passionate about medical equipment, patient safety, engineering and helping people. People that work well in a team and have a desire to learn.

• Engineering or Technology knowledge to SCQF Level 9
• Experience of the service, repair and fault finding of medical equipment
• Understanding of the clinical, scientific, and engineering principles of medical equipment
• Good organisational and communication skills

Required

Applicants must be able to demonstrate the required level of English language proficiency, if English is not their first language through one of the following:

• Academic qualification at SCQF Level 9 or higher completed at a UK based University.
• International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with an overall score of 7, and no element of reading, speaking, listening, or writing below 6.5.
• Occupational English Test with a minimum grade B in the writing section (NMC C+), and only one score lower than B in the other three sections and no lower than C+
