Position Overview
Nova Scotia Health Authority is seeking an experienced Specialty Registered Nurse (RN)to join the Women & Children’s Unit at South Shore Regional Hospital. This position requires a highly skilled nurse capable of providing comprehensive maternal, newborn, medical, and surgical nursing care within a multidisciplinary healthcare environment.
The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering safe, evidence-based, patient-centered care across the continuum of maternal and newborn services, including antenatal, labor and delivery, postpartum, and neonatal care. The RN must also be comfortable caring for medical and surgical patients as required within the unit.
This role demands strong clinical judgment, leadership skills, and the ability to effectively manage complex and unpredictable patient situations while collaborating with physicians, midwives, pediatric teams, and allied health professionals.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to women, newborns, and families throughout the maternity care continuum.
- Deliver nursing care for antenatal (prenatal) patients , including assessment, monitoring, education, and care planning.
- Provide skilled nursing support during labor and delivery , including maternal and fetal monitoring and emergency response when required.
- Deliver postpartum care for mothers and newborns, including assessments, recovery monitoring, breastfeeding support, and discharge planning.
- Provide neonatal care , including newborn assessments, stabilization, monitoring, and intervention as required.
- Care for assigned medical and surgical patients within the Women & Children’s Unit.
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized patient care plans.
- Recognize and respond appropriately to obstetrical, neonatal, medical, and surgical emergencies.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure coordinated and effective patient care.
- Provide patient and family education regarding pregnancy, childbirth, newborn care, recovery, and health maintenance.
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in accordance with Nova Scotia Health Authority standards and policies.
- Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and evidence-based practice initiatives.
- Provide clinical leadership and mentorship to team members when appropriate.
- Ensure compliance with professional nursing standards, organizational policies, and regulatory requirements.
Mandatory Qualifications & Required Skills
Clinical Experience
Candidates must demonstrate recent and relevant experience in all of the following areas:
- Antenatal (Prenatal) Nursing Care
- Labor and Delivery Nursing
- Postpartum Nursing Care
- Neonatal Nursing Care
- Medical Patient Care
- Surgical Patient Care
Required Certifications
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in good standing.
- Eligibility for registration and practice within Nova Scotia.
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Certification – Mandatory
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification

- Experience working in rural or regional hospital settings.
- Experience caring for high-risk maternal and neonatal patients.
