Yukon Wide Adventures
Wilderness Canoe Guide / Expedition Leader
Yukon Wide Adventures Inc. – Whitehorse, Yukon
Employment: Seasonal, May–September 2027
Compensation: Competitive, based on experience
Positions Available: Lead and Assistant Wilderness Guides
About Yukon Wide Adventures
Yukon Wide Adventures is a locally owned wilderness adventure company based in Whitehorse, Yukon. We specialize in guided canoe expeditions on the Big Salmon, Yukon, Nisutlin, and Pelly Rivers, offering adventures ranging from half-day experiences to remote wilderness expeditions lasting up to 20 days.
We are seeking experienced, enthusiastic wilderness canoe guides to join our team for the 2027 summer season.
The Person We're Looking For
Above all, we're looking for someone who genuinely loves people . Our business is built on relationships, and we believe a great wilderness guide is much more than an experienced paddler. We want an outgoing, personable, and enthusiastic individual who enjoys connecting with guests, sharing stories, and creating memorable experiences.
Equally important is strong character, sound judgment, and resilience under pressure . Wilderness expeditions don't always go as planned. We need someone who remains calm, confident, and positive when facing difficult weather, challenging river conditions, or unexpected setbacks.
The ideal candidate leads by example, adapts to adversity, solves problems, and maintains a steady, reassuring presence for guests and fellow guides.
A genuine love for people, a positive attitude, and the ability to remain composed through adversity are just as important to us as technical guiding skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead or assist with guided wilderness canoe expeditions lasting 3–20 days.
- Safely navigate moving water, assess river hazards, and manage changing wilderness conditions.
- Provide professional leadership, river safety instruction, and an exceptional guest experience.
- Prepare high-quality wilderness meals, follow established menu plans, and maintain safe food handling and storage practices.
- Manage wilderness camps, equipment, food supplies, and daily expedition logistics.
- Maintain emergency preparedness and respond effectively to wilderness incidents.
- Create a welcoming, positive group atmosphere and build meaningful relationships with guests.
- Assist with expedition preparation, equipment maintenance, and post-trip organization.
- Support shorter guided canoe trips and other outdoor activities between extended expeditions.
Required Qualifications
- Current Swiftwater Rescue Certification or equivalent recognized training.
- Current Wilderness First Aid Certification appropriate for remote wilderness expeditions.
Preferred Experience & Skills
- Previous experience guiding multi-day wilderness canoe expeditions, particularly trips lasting 10–20 days.
- Strong canoe handling, river navigation, and wilderness leadership skills.
- Experience preparing quality meals and managing food supplies on extended expeditions.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, enthusiasm, and a genuine enjoyment of working with people.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and the capacity to remain calm and effective under pressure.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in remote wilderness environments.
What We Offer
- Opportunities to guide some of Canada's most spectacular wilderness rivers.
- Competitive compensation based on experience and qualifications.
- A variety of short and extended wilderness expeditions.
- A supportive, locally owned company that values its team members.
- Potential for year-round employment through winter Northern Lights viewing at our Aurora Outpost and dog sledding operations with our sister company, Elevation Sled Dogs.
How to Apply
Please submit your resume along with a brief introduction outlining your river guiding experience, relevant certifications, wilderness cooking experience, and availability for summer 2027.
We're particularly interested in individuals who combine strong wilderness skills with outstanding people skills and a positive, resilient attitude.
Join Yukon Wide Adventures and help us share the extraordinary wilderness of the Yukon with visitors from around the world!
