Sechelt is a vibrant seaside community of ~10,000 residents, located between the Strait of Georgia and the Sechelt Inlet on the traditional and unceded territory of the shíshálh Nation. Reporting to the Director of Corporate and Community Services, the Community Safety Coordinator plays a key role in fostering a safe, resilient and connected community. This position leads the development, and delivery of community safety and crime prevention initiatives, working closely with volunteers, RCMP, municipal partners and community organizations. The ideal candidate is proactive relationship-builder who thrives in a visible, community-facing role and is motivated by making a tangible difference in residents’ wellbeing. Key Responsibilities
Program Development and Community Engagement
- Research, assess, and identify community safety, wellbeing, and crime prevention needs.
- Respond to the public through community group engagement and education.
- Collaborate to deliver community awareness and resiliency campaigns.
- Promote volunteer opportunities through outreach, social media, and community events to maintain strong participation.
Volunteer Coordination
- Recruit, onboard, train and support volunteers for programs such as Block Watch, Citizens on Patrol, and emergency preparedness initiatives.
- Develop and deliver training sessions to ensure volunteers understand safety protocols, reporting procedures, and community engagement best practices.
- Schedule and deploy volunteers for patrols, events, and safety campaigns.
- Track and report on volunteer activities, including hours, program effectiveness, and incident follow-ups.
Partnerships and Reporting
- Liaise between volunteers, municipal departments, shishalh Nation, health partners, and RCMP to maintain alignment with community safety objectives.
- Prepare reports on program progress, outcome and emerging issues to leadership
Role Requirements
Applicants must meet the following essential qualifications:
- Completion of a post-secondary degree in criminology, public administration, or a related field.
- Minimum of three years’ experience in community safety or related work.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Extensive knowledge of community safety and crime prevention philosophies and methodologies.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and collaborate within teams.
- Demonstrated initiative and accountability.
- Ability to interpret, report and advise on regulatory matters and develop solutions to difficult situations while working cooperatively with community agencies.
- Strong organizational skills including the ability to effectively prioritize work amidst competing deadlines.
- Possession of a valid Class 5 BC Driver's License.
- Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 applications
Preferred
- Experience in volunteer management and supervision is an asset.
- Experience in local government is an asset.
Working Conditions
This is a temporary (one year), part-time unionized position within the BCGEU. Wage for the position is set at Grid Level 10, $38.91 - $43.24 per hour, plus 9.8% of straight time pay in lieu of vacation, benefits, statutory holidays and other paid leaves. Hours of work will be 28 hours, 4 days per week from Monday to Friday; however, occasional flexibility is required in the evening or weekend events.
