Associate Director - Ethics & Compliance (Toronto)

Overall Responsibility

As the Ethics & Compliance (E&C) Associate Director of Investigations, you will lead and shape the firm’s Ethics program, specifically managing the investigation team that handles complex and multifaceted concerns.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, manage, and remediate key risk areas across the firm’s E&C program, addressing legal, regulatory, and compliance-related reviews.
  • Provide experienced leadership to a high‑impact team of investigators handling complex investigations, including review, recruitment, onboarding, and coaching.
  • Oversee investigative operations: review investigation plans, make key decisions on progress, and review final outcome reports.
  • Drive continuous improvement activities, including the design and delivery of guidance, standards, procedures, and reporting expectations.
  • Ensure relevant training and skills needs are addressed within the investigations program.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance and evolve investigations, ensuring consistency across the firm.
  • Report on investigations, including timeliness, through defined internal processes and to E&C leadership.
  • Support the implementation and maintenance of case management tools to enhance capabilities, ensuring data quality and accurate record‑keeping.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across Legal, Internal Audit, Finance, HR, and other functions to align investigations with regulatory expectations.
  • Own relevant organizational, operational, or strategic E&C initiatives and engage in partnership with other E&C colleagues.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree(s) and/or professional certifications preferred; Josri Doctor (JD) strongly preferred.
  • 10+ years of professional experience in legal, regulatory, or compliance environments.
  • 10+ years of experience leading and managing complex investigations, including litigation, internal investigations, or regulatory reviews.
  • Deep technical experience in identifying and addressing legal, regulatory, and compliance issues, including multifaceted investigations.
  • Proficiency with third‑party case management technologies to drive complex investigations.
  • Strong Excel, Tableau (or other data visualization technology), analytical, and data‑management skills.
  • Demonstrated entrepreneurial mindset to tackle ambiguous problems and see them through to resolution.
  • Adept at influencing and engaging with all types of audiences to cultivate trust‑based, peer‑counselor relationships.
  • Exceptional organizational and project‑management skills, with the ability to drive outcomes on cross‑functional and complex topics.
  • Exhibits the highest levels of discretion and judgment in safeguarding highly sensitive and confidential materials.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills in English, with the ability to adapt messaging for different audiences and craft cohesive storylines and communications.
