Position Title: Accommodation Advisor (5 positions)
Status: FT Support
Hours: 40 hours per week
Faculty/Department: SSE, Student Wellness and Equitable Learning
Campus/Location: This is a fully
Salary: Payband: K Salary Range: $46.08 - $53.43
Starting Salary: $46.08 Progression through the payband is in accordance with the increments in the payband as outline in the Full-Time Support Staff Collective Agreement based on actual service in the payband.
Schedules:
3 Advisors (2 North, 1 Lake): Monday - Thursday, 8:30 AM - 6:30 PM
2 Advisors (1 North, 1 Lake): Tuesday - Friday, 8:30 AM - 6:30 PM
About the Accommodation Advisor Role:
The Accessible Learning Services department is guided by the social model of disability, which focuses on removing physical, social, and attitudinal barriers in the learning environment. It prioritizes learner-centered approaches and promotes inclusive, collaborative spaces where all students, especially those with disabilities, are empowered to participate fully. The department actively works to reduce barriers, ensure clear communication, and facilitate equitable access to services. Through this model, the department fosters a proactive and empowering relationship with students, advocating for an inclusive educational experience. The Accommodation Advisor will play a pivotal role in supporting learners with disabilities by guiding them through the process of determining and implementing appropriate academic accommodations. This role is rooted in the social model of disability, emphasizing learner-driven processes, empowerment, and the removal of barriers to ensure an inclusive and equitable educational environment. The Accommodation Advisor will work closely with learners to assess their individual needs, facilitate self-advocacy, and collaborate with faculty and staff to ensure accommodations are both appropriate and effective. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:- Promote self-advocacy, independence, and self-determination among learners by providing guidance and resources throughout their academic journey.
- Conduct intake interviews to explore the impact of disabilities on learners' academic experiences and identify appropriate support services both within and outside the institution.
- Develop and implement individualized accommodation plans through an interactive process with the learner, considering self-reporting, assessment documentation, and the specific demands of their academic programs.
- Liaise with faculty and staff to ensure accommodations align with course requirements and uphold academic integrity while meeting the essential learning outcomes.
- Facilitate ongoing reviews of accommodation plans to address changing needs or concerns.
- Accommodations for field placements/clinical placements
- Conflict management between learner and faculty
- Classroom behaviour issues
- Management of medical concerns in classroom
- Planning with faculty around reduced course load
- Consult, direct, and support departmental programming and groups.
- Coordinate and facilitate information sessions for learners, parents/guardians, and colleagues on identifying and accessing services for learners with disabilities.
- Act as a liaison between learners, faculty, and external partners to promote understanding and cooperation in the implementation of accommodations.
- Participate in the development of new initiatives to meet the evolving needs of a diverse learner population.
- Facilitating a Learning-Centered Environment: designing and delivering programs and services that prioritize student learning, growth, and development. Ensuring that our services and initiatives align with pedagogical best practices and support student success.
- Community Engagement and Building: actively engaging with students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders to build a vibrant and inclusive campus community. Creating opportunities for collaboration, dialogue, and shared learning experiences.
- Data Collection and Analysis: collecting, organizing, and analyzing service user data and metrics to identify trends and areas for improvement. Utilizing data-driven insights to inform decision-making and enhance the quality of our student affairs services.
- Evidence-Informed Decision-Making: using evidence-based research and best practices to guide our strategies and initiatives. Regularly assessing the effectiveness of our programs and services, making data-informed adjustments as necessary.
- Promoting Diversity and Inclusion: contributing to a culture that values diversity, equity, and inclusion, and ensures that all students feel supported and included. Implementing initiatives that promote a welcoming and inclusive campus environment.
- Collaborative Cross-Functional Work: collaborating with team members from diverse functional areas to achieve common goals and create a holistic student experience. Sharing knowledge and best practices across the student affairs team to foster a culture of continuous improvement.
- Professional Development and Learning: Engaging in ongoing professional development to stay informed about the latest trends and innovations in student affairs. Encouraging and supporting the growth and development of team members.
- Communication and Reporting: Regularly communicating the impact and outcomes of our initiatives to internal and external stakeholders.Preparing reports and presenting findings that demonstrate the value of our contributions to the institution.
- Student-Centered Innovation: Encouraging and participating in the development of innovative solutions and services that directly benefit students and enhance their educational experience.
- Ethical and Responsible Service Delivery: Upholding the highest ethical standards in our work and ensuring responsible stewardship of resources and student data.
Minimum of three years full-time experience working with adults with disabilities in a community organization, educational institution, or healthcare setting; as well as:
- Demonstrated experience in assessing disability-related needs and recommending accommodations to reduce or eliminate barriers in an educational context.
- Experience interpreting and applying medical, psycho-educational, and other assessment reports to develop effective accommodation plans.
- Advanced understanding of the social model of disability and its application in post-secondary education.
- Strong skills in active listening, empathy, and inclusive communication to support diverse learners.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Ontario Human Rights Code, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), and other related policies.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team in a dynamic and diverse environment.
- Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Proficiency in using databases, learning management systems, and adaptive technology.
- Proven ability to analyze and interpret assessment and benchmarking data to inform practice.
