Maintenance 3 Worker- Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection Operator

The Town of Irricana is seeking a dedicated, skilled, and safety-conscious individual to join our municipal operations team as a Maintenance 3 Worker-Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection Operator. The Opportunity:
This is a hands-on municipal operations position responsible for supporting the safe and efficient operation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of the Town’s water distribution and wastewater collection systems, as well as general municipal infrastructure and maintenance activities.

The successful candidate will work as part of the Operations team to ensure municipal systems, facilities, roads, parks, and related assets are maintained to a high standard. This role requires a strong understanding of utility operations, mechanical maintenance, workplace safety, and the ability to respond effectively to operational needs and emergencies.

Reports To:   
Manager of Operations

Key Responsibilities Water Distribution

• Operate, monitor, inspect and maintain the Town’s water distribution infrastructure in compliance with Alberta Environment and Protected Areas regulations, municipal policies, and applicable safety standards.
• Assist with the operation and maintenance of water mains, valves, hydrants, water services, and related equipment.
• Conduct routine inspections to ensure system reliability and regulatory compliance, identify leaks, damage, or other operational concerns.
• Support water main repairs, service connections, flushing, hydrant maintenance, and system troubleshooting.
• Assist with water quality monitoring, sampling, and documentation in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements.
• Maintain accurate operational records, inspection logs, respond to alarms, maintenance reports, and work orders.
• Respond to water distribution emergencies and service interruptions as required.
• Water meter installation and repair, along with rotational water meter readings.
• Inspections of new water/sewer connections to the Town’s mains.

Key Responsibilities Wastewater Collection Operations

• Operate, inspect, and maintain wastewater collection systems (lagoon) and related infrastructure.
• Assist with the maintenance of sanitary sewer mains, manholes, and associated equipment.
• Identify and report blockages, leaks, infiltration, equipment failures, and other system concerns.
• Support sewer flushing, cleaning, inspections, repairs, and preventative maintenance activities.
• Respond to wastewater collection emergencies and operational issues.
• Ensure work is completed in accordance with safety procedures, environmental requirements, and municipal standards.
• Maintain accurate operational and maintenance records.

Key Responsibilities Roads, Parks & General Municipal Operations

• Operate hand tools, power tools, pumps, compressors, and maintenance equipment.
• Operate municipal vehicles and light/heavy equipment.
• Perform routine equipment inspections and preventative maintenance.
• Assist with road maintenance including pothole repairs, asphalt patching, grading, and gravel placement.
• Repair and replace signs, barricades, and traffic control devices.
• Perform line painting and roadway marking maintenance.
• Perform mowing, trimming, weed control, vegetation maintenance, and tree care in public areas.
• Assist with snow and ice control operations including plowing, sanding, and sidewalk clearing.
• Support municipal facility maintenance and seasonal operational activities.
• General duties such as Facility/Building Maintenance, Equipment Maintenance and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills:

• Alberta Environment Water Distribution Level 1 Certification
• Alberta Environment Wastewater Collection Level 1 Certification.
• Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License.
• Acceptable Driver’s Abstract.
• Ability to perform physical labor as part of the job duties and stand/walk for extended periods of time.
• Rotates on standby with other department staff for evening and weekend on-call and may be required to work outside the regular hours of work.
• Ability to obtain equipment operation certifications as required.
• High School Diploma or Equivalent
• Basic understanding of municipal water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
• Knowledge of safe operating procedures and municipal maintenance practices.
• Ability to read maps, utility plans, and locates.
• Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Ability to maintain good public relations during contact with customers and members of the public while performing the assigned duties.
• Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to maintain accurate records and complete reports.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
• Ability to prioritize tasks and respond effectively during emergencies.
• Strong problem-solving, planning, and organizational skills.

Assets and Considered an Advantage:

• Previous municipal Public Works/Operations experience.
• Confined Space Entry Certification.
• Standard First Aid & CPR Certification.
• WHMIS Certification.
• Equipment operation experience

The successful candidate may be required to undergo a Criminal Records Check (CPIC / CRJMC) prior to their start date.
