Temporary (12-month contract) Part-time Labour Relations Representative Job Posting

The BCIT Faculty and Staff Association (FSA) is searching for a part-time (3 days per week) Labour Relations Representative for a 12-month term with a possibility of extension or renewal. The base salary for this position is $92,378.89 to $109,591.55. This position’s pro-rated salary for the part-time work, in person during regular business hours from Tuesday to Thursday, is between $55,427.34 and $65,754.93 with placement based on experience.

Because the FSA’s core values include collective care and responsibility, you will be supported and mentored by co-workers who believe in collaboration and learning from one another. The Labour Relations team meets at least once a week to share concerns and exchange ideas, but we often meet informally to discuss our work. You will be directly mentored by a Senior Labour Relations Representative who has been with the FSA for almost a decade. As well, you will report to an Executive Director with decades of experience with the Post-Secondary Education sector in British Columbia. In addition to two seasoned Labour Relations Representatives, who have been with the FSA for 7 years, we also have a Labour Relations Assistant to support the team. The FSA staff, moreover, includes an Associate Executive Director, Information and Member Engagement Officers, and an Operations Assistant.

Your Duties and Responsibilities

• Investigate workplace issues and develops strategies to address disputes and problems, in collaboration with colleagues
• Co-ordinate with colleagues to provide consistent and effective labour relations representation and advice to members
• Represent the union and members in consultation and recourse processes with management, including grievance processes
• Advocate on behalf of the FSA and members up to referral to arbitration
• Thoroughly document issues and grievance files
• Conduct research for issue and grievance files based on past practice and resolutions, as well as legal precedents and other reference points
• Develop and facilitate member education programs in accordance with the union’s member education plan
• Prepare written materials for the newsletter and website as requested

Qualities We’re Looking For

• Professional experience in labour relations, e.g. as a union advocate addressing workplace issues
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively as a team member in a demanding environment
• Ability to listen, ask incisive questions, identify problems, and develop solutions
• Demonstrated advocacy and negotiation skills
• Strong written communications skills
• Proven skills to reliably research, record, track, retrieve, and share information in a timely way
• Strong analytical reasoning
• Comfortable working in a technology-enabled workplace, including reliance on MS Office and Outlook, internet research, and creating database entries and retrieving database information
