About Us

The Office of the Vice-Provost, Faculty & Academic Life (VPFAL) is the institutional office responsible for providing academic human resources services in relation to faculty members and librarians across the University. It provides advice, support, and/or approval to Divisions and divisional academic human resources teams and the senior administration on a broad range of matters related to the academic life cycle. The office also serves as the primary point of contact for engagement with the University of Toronto Faculty Association, including in relation to salary, benefit and workload negotiations, investigations, policy revision and development, as well as grievances and arbitration.

Your Opportunity

Under the general direction of the Associate Director, and working in collaboration with a wide range of offices both internal and external to the University, the Faculty Relations Consultant will provide a broad range of support in respect of academic human resources and faculty/labour relations activities across the University of Toronto, with a primary focus on negotiations with the UTFA and case management of grievances and workplace complaints involving faculty members and librarians. These include complaints regarding alleged incidents of bullying, harassment, discrimination, sexual violence, and complaints from students regarding their experience with graduate supervision.  The incumbent will also provide support on related governance processes (i.e., bringing matters through Governing Council processes for information or approval).

The role requires strong skills and knowledge in employee and labour relations, issue assessment, case management, stakeholder consultation, conflict resolution, policy interpretation, collective agreement administration, and handling highly sensitive and confidential workplace matters.

Key responsibilities:

Advising on the interpretation and application of agreements, policies and procedures; case management from a VPFAL perspective of workplace and student complaints, and grievances, involving faculty members and librarians; drafting letters; providing support to University bargaining committees and the process of implementation of agreements; producing a variety of reports in support of faculty relations and bargaining with UTFA; and providing related administrative support including note-taking in meetings, preparing speaking notes and keeping track of deadlines, including governance timelines.

Qualifications Required:

Education:

• University degree in a relevant discipline and course work in the Human Resources field with particular focus on labour relations/faculty relations; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• An MIR/MIRHR is considered an asset.

Experience:

• Minimum three (3) years' related human resources experience with an emphasis on collective agreement and employment policy interpretation and application, grievance/arbitration processes, and workplace complaints and investigations.
• Experience in Academic HR in a university context is considered an asset.
• Demonstrated experience advising internal clients in policy interpretation and with employee investigations and case management.
• Knowledge of labour and employment law, including the Ontario Human Rights Code.
• Experience working with diverse populations including demonstrated effective consultation skills with designated groups.
• Sound knowledge of human resources best practices and familiarity with public sector employment.
• Must have previous experience data management. 
• Significant knowledge of HR principles and practices and, preferably, knowledge of the University’s policies and practices as they pertain to faculty members and librarians.

Skills:

• Computer experience including word processing, spreadsheet applications, database management, and scheduling software (e.g, Outlook). 
• Internet research skills required.
