Instrument Technician

As part of the Maintenance Team at Braya Renewable Fuels, the Instrument Technician is responsible for the Installation and Commissioning of the Instrumentation Assets associated with the control systems.

Responsibilities

  • Install, calibrate, and maintain instrumentation and control systems critical to refinery operations, including flow meters, pressure transmitters, temperature sensors, and level gauges.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot faults in complex process control systems to minimize downtime and ensure consistent product quality.

Support daily operations by responding to instrumentation issues in a timely and efficient manner, often under time-sensitive or hazardous conditions.

  • Calibrate safety-critical instruments such as gas detectors, emergency shutdown devices (ESD), and pressure safety valves, ensuring compliance with refinery standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Interpret P&IDs, loop diagrams, and control narratives to support accurate instrumentation work and process understanding.
  • Conduct preventive and predictive maintenance in accordance with maintenance schedules and best practices.
  • Assist with control system upgrades and commissioning of new process units or instrumentation packages.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of calibration records, maintenance history, and instrument specifications for audit and regulatory compliance.
  • Work collaboratively with operations, electrical, and process engineering teams to support production goals and troubleshoot system-wide issues.
  • Ensure work is performed in alignment with Braya's health, safety, and environmental (HSE) policies, including permit-to-work systems and hazardous area classifications.

Qualifications

  • Industrial Instrumentation and Controls Certification (Red Seal Journeyperson)
  • Five years of field experience as an instrument technician in a process or refinery environment, with refinery being the preference. The five years must include at least 1 year with a DCS system, which implies loop-checking and troubleshooting. ABB DCS is preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of work-related refinery experience
  • Must hold NL-recognized certifications and educational credentials commensurate with the position, which is established and audited by BRAYA.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven dedication to health, safety, and environment

Physical Demands:

  • Regularly lifts/moves object up to 25 lbs. Occasionally lifts/moves >50lbs. Push/Pulling forces up to 50lbs are required

  • Use of gross and fine motor skills and maintaining physical balance (e.g., Ladders/scaffolding)
