Senior Engineer, Mine Projects Ministry of Energy and Mines – Mines and Minerals Regulation Division, Mine Rehabilitation Section (Sudbury, Ontario). Temporary position of up to 8 months. Responsible for leading engineering rehabilitation initiatives on abandoned mine sites, ensuring safety and environmental compliance.
Responsibilities Assemble terms of reference for engineering consultant studies and prepare contract specifications.
Plan, organize, and manage the tendering process and recommend final acceptance.
Review and analyze engineering designs; prepare documents, reports, and data for sites.
Design, conduct, or coordinate surveys and engineering/technical investigations.
Ensure compliance with environmental legislation, ministry standards, and guidelines.
Provide testimony in court proceedings.
Provide professional technical advice and training to staff.
Travel to project sites throughout Ontario as required.
Qualifications Mandatory requirement: Current accreditation as a Professional Engineer in a Canadian Province or Territory and ability to obtain a Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) license.
Technical Knowledge and Expertise Specialized knowledge in civil, chemical, or environmental engineering.
Experience in mine rehabilitation, contaminated site clean‑up, waste management, acid rock drainage, metal leaching, hydrology, and tailings management.
Understanding of relevant provincial and federal environmental legislation (e.g., Mining Act, Environmental Protection Act).
Familiarity with environmental management trends and emerging technologies for mine rehabilitation.
Project, Risk, and Contract Management Skills Experience in project and change management methodologies to deliver complex projects on time.
Ability to assess risks and provide recommendations to senior management.
Knowledge of procurement and contract management for engineering projects.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills Consulting and advising stakeholders, including Indigenous communities, industry representatives, and government officials.
Negotiating scope changes and resolving contractor performance issues.
Strong political acumen to manage sensitive issues and build consensus.
Excellent ability to translate technical information into plain language for non‑technical audiences.
Analytical and Problem‑Solving Skills Identify pollutant sources and conduct investigations.
Resolve physical and chemical stability issues during mine closure.
Lead evaluations of remediation options for long‑term care.
Assess engineering reports, proposals, and third‑party work for compliance.
Computer Skills Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, and database packages for data analysis and report preparation.
Additional Information Travel to sites throughout Ontario is required. The position offers a competitive salary range of $98,822.00 – $138,106.00 per year and supports work‑life balance with limited travel within the province.
