Salary :

NP-35 (CAD52.31 - CAD64.92 per hour plus a bi-weekly pensionable Market Adjustment up to a maximum of $415.35) (currently approved until Feb 28, 2027, with possibility of extension)

Job Summary

This position works within the Nurse Practitioner's (NP) scope of practice in the following category of practice: (Pediatric with specialized education relevant to Neonatology). This is an advanced practice role providing professional, analytical and an autonomous comprehensive range of health services to patients including, but not limited to, resuscitation, stabilization and management of ill infants, health assessments and diagnosis of diseases, disorders, injuries and conditions; treating and managing acute and chronic illnesses; and identifying health risks and needs within a holistic model.

In collaboration with the interdisciplinary health care team, the NNP will manage, direct and provide comprehensive care for a select patient population with acute and specialized neonatal and newborn health care needs. This includes performing comprehensive health assessment based on a thorough history, physical examination, and additional assessment strategies individualized to patient needs and practice setting; utilizing critical appraisal skills in decisions related to the use of clinical and diagnostic investigations, interventions and the management of care; demonstrating evidence-based clinical decision-making through the critical examination and application of evidence from clinical research integrated with clinical expertise, and existing resources; performing diagnostic procedures and therapeutics; coordinating activities and functions regarding patient care, progress and outcomes.

The NNP will have a key leadership role within the NICU, performing quality improvement work; participating in policy and procedure development, facilitating educational support for patients, families and staff and will be a critical member of the clinical leadership team supporting high quality evidence-based care for high-risk neonatal patients. The NNP must also be able to identify the need for change related to clinical, educational or research issues in clinical practice and initiate appropriate action while promoting staff and patient/family satisfaction within a philosophy of family-centered care.

The NNP clarifies relevant research questions, collaborates, initiates and disseminates research activities; provides leadership in the development, implementation and evaluation of evidence-based practice; and promotes the use of research to evaluate the outcomes of care while acting as a leader, resource person, preceptor and mentor for nurses, students and other professionals.

The NICU is a 30 bed Level II and Level III, tertiary referral center for all neonatal services for the province of Newfoundland and Labrador as well as for the French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon.

Job Demands

Constantly moves, lifts, or operates equipment/machinery up to 10 lbs. and regularly is required to lift/move equipment, books, supplies, and sometimes children up to 25 lbs. Occasionally, may have to reposition a patient over 50 lbs.

Physical effort also includes regular sitting to conduct patient histories, performing work on the computer and when assessing patients, regularly stands or walks.

When performing procedures, regularly uses fine finger/precision work and hand tools (i.e. medical instruments, computer mouse, stethoscope, etc.) requiring accurate control and steadiness.

Visual concentration is required when performing physical assessment and procedures, completing charts/reports, observing patients, reading equipment/monitors, and completing work-related correspondence on the computer.

Job Qualifications

Completion of an approved/recognized Neonatal Nurse Practitioner program is required.

Current and continuing registration with the College of Registered Nurses of NL (CRNNL) and Licensed (or eligible for licensure) as a Nurse Practitioner (Pediatric- with specialized education relevant to neonatology) with the CRNNL is required.

A minimum of five years' nursing experience within the last seven years working in neonatal intensive care is required.

Current BCLS Certification is required.

Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Certification is required.
