About the Opportunity

We are looking for a Mortgage Underwriter to join a growing Ontario-based mortgage team in a full-time, permanent remote position. We are open to candidates at both the intermediate and senior levels, with compensation reflecting experience, technical knowledge, and the ability to manage mortgage files independently.

This role is ideal for a highly organized and detail-oriented mortgage professional who enjoys the underwriting process and is comfortable managing files from the initial introduction call notes through underwriting, approval, and handoff to Fulfillment.

The successful candidate will play an important role in keeping mortgage files moving efficiently, communicating with clients and lenders, managing deadlines, and ensuring every file is accurate, complete, and positioned appropriately.

We are specifically seeking a licensed mortgage professional whose career interests are focused on underwriting rather than building their own book of business as an active mortgage agent or broker. This is a dedicated underwriting position with an emphasis on file management, lender relationships, and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

• Review introduction-call notes and take ownership of assigned mortgage files.
  
• Underwrite new pre-approval applications and live mortgage deals.
  
• Review borrower documentation and assess files for completeness, accuracy, and qualification.
  
• Determine appropriate lender and product options based on the borrower's circumstances.
  
• Research lender guidelines and product requirements when needed.
  
• Identify outstanding documentation and requirements and proactively follow up.
  
• Submit files to lenders and follow up to ensure approvals are issued promptly.
  
• Manage lender conditions, exceptions, escalations, deadlines, and closing dates.
  
• Monitor multiple active files and reprioritize quickly as urgent matters arise.
  
• Communicate professionally with clients, lenders, lawyers, and internal team members.
  
• Respond to client questions and provide clear updates throughout the underwriting process.
  
• Review upcoming files with team members and identify what is required to move files forward.
  
• Confirm lawyer instructions and required documentation have been issued for upcoming closings.
  
• Monitor scheduled closings and follow up on files that have not closed as expected.
  
• Complete a thorough handoff to Fulfillment once the underwriting stage is complete.
  
• Maintain accurate and organized file records and ensure consistent follow-through.
  
• Participate in regular team meetings to review active and live deals.
  

What We're Looking For

• Valid Ontario Mortgage Agent Level 1 licence or higher , with licensing status verified through FSRA.
  
• Previous hands-on mortgage underwriting experience, ideally within a mortgage brokerage environment.
  
• We welcome intermediate-level underwriters who have developed a solid underwriting foundation, as well as senior underwriters with extensive experience managing more complex files.
  
• Strong knowledge of mortgage products, lender guidelines, qualification requirements, and current lending practices.
  
• Experience using Velocity is a plus.
  
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  
• Exceptional organization and follow-through.
  
• Ability to manage multiple files and competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  
• Sound judgment and decision-making skills, with the ability to recognize when additional guidance or escalation is appropriate.

Compensation

Annual Base Salary: $60,000–$80,000, plus performance-based bonuses.

Compensation will be determined based on the successful candidate's underwriting experience, technical proficiency, and ability to independently manage files.
