Job Responsibility:

The Gwa'sala-‘Nakwaxda'xw Nation is seeking a dedicated and experienced Early Learning Years Coordinator for a full-time, one-year term position, with the possibility of extension. This vital role supports the design, coordination, and delivery of culturally grounded early childhood education programs for Gwa'sala-‘Nakwaxda'xw children and families.

Working under the direction of the Gwa'sala-‘Nakwaxda'xw School Principal/Daycare Manager and in collaboration with the Health Director, the Early Learning Years Coordinator will act as a bridge between families, educators, and community service providers. The successful candidate will provide leadership in program development, support early learning staff, and strengthen connections between early learning programs and the broader community.

This position requires a balance of administrative oversight, hands-on engagement, and a deep commitment to culturally safe and high-quality early learning experiences that reflect the values and traditions of the Gwa'sala-‘Nakwaxda'xw Nation.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and evaluate culturally responsive early childhood education programs that support the developmental needs of children aged 0-6.
  • Ensure programs are grounded in Indigenous values, languages, and worldviews, while aligning with BC Early Learning Framework standards.
  • Support inclusive practices that meet the needs of all children, including those with developmental delays or special needs.
  • Foster strong relationships with parents, caregivers, and extended families, encouraging their active participation in programming.
  • Work collaboratively with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members to incorporate traditional knowledge and land-based learning.
  • Organize family events, workshops, and home visits to strengthen connections between early learning programs and families.
  • Liaise with local schools, health professionals, and Indigenous and non-Indigenous service providers to coordinate wraparound services.
  • Represent the early learning program in community planning meetings and regional early childhood networks.

Education and Qualifications

  • Diploma or Degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE) or a related field.
  • Current ECE Certification (ECE or ECE IT) and License to Practice in British Columbia.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification (Childcare Level).
  • Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector screening.
  • Food Safe Certification (or willingness to obtain).

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Strong skills in planning, implementing, and evaluating early learning programs that reflect developmental needs and cultural relevance.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with children, parents, Elders, staff, and community partners.
  • Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills to respond to challenges in a calm and solution-focused manner.
  • Effective time management and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities, including scheduling, reporting, and budgeting.
  • Skilled at leading team meetings, staff development sessions, and community engagement activities.
  • In-depth understanding of physical, emotional, cognitive, social, and spiritual development in children aged 0-6.
  • Working knowledge of the BC Early Learning Framework and its application in diverse cultural contexts.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous pedagogies, cultural teachings, traditional parenting practices, and community protocols.
  • Understanding of how trauma affects early development and how to support healing-centered engagement with children and families.
  • Ability to integrate Indigenous knowledge systems into early learning environments in meaningful and respectful ways.
  • Ability to build trusting, respectful, and reciprocal relationships with children, families, staff, Elders, and other community members.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $26.00-$32.00 per hour

Expected hours: 35 per week

Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday
