Application Architecture Engineer (Côte Saint-Luc)

Overview

A career as an Application Architecture Engineer within National Bank’s Digital Studio means designing and building the architectures that power the digital experience of millions of personal banking clients. You combine technical expertise, influence‑based leadership, operational rigor and boldness to help deliver robust, secure and scalable solutions while challenging the status quo and accelerating innovation.

Responsibilities

  • Design application architectures (back‑end, web and mobile front‑end) tailored to business and product needs, and non‑functional requirements such as security, performance, scalability and resilience.
  • Ensure system integration and interoperability within a microservices ecosystem, including REST and GraphQL APIs and event‑driven architectures.
  • Document and model application architectures using C4 diagrams, ADRs to facilitate maintainability and reuse.
  • Ensure compliance with the organization’s architecture standards, norms and positioning.
  • Actively contribute to code by designing, developing and delivering solutions while adhering to TDD, CI/CD practices and quality standards related to code coverage, security and maintainability.
  • Support and guide delivery teams through design reviews, peer reviews and code reviews; take part in architecture rituals such as communities of practice, complexity estimations and design reviews.
  • Analyze production incidents, implement sustainable solutions, and capture lessons learned for future reference.
  • Challenge the status quo by proposing innovative architectures, optimizing deployment processes (automation, serverless, FinOps) and exploring emerging technologies such as generative artificial intelligence and productivity tools.
  • Develop solutions and tools to accelerate and increase the reliability of team deliveries; integrate observability and monitoring mechanisms to anticipate issues and optimize system maintainability.
  • Present and advocate architectural decisions to broad audiences, both technical and business, and share knowledge within communities of practice and through mentoring sessions.

Team Context

You will join a specialized team of architecture designers, software development directors and site reliability engineers reporting directly to the Senior Director, Software Development within the Digital Studio (Personal Banking Digital Delivery). The Digital Studio brings together more than a hundred colleagues and is recognized for expertise in customer experience development, consistent delivery quality and dynamic collaborative culture.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology or a related field.
  • Minimum seven years of experience in web and mobile software development.
  • Strong expertise in modern application architecture, including microservices, REST and GraphQL APIs, and event‑driven architectures.
  • Solid mastery of at least one technical focus area (back‑end or front‑end) with a good understanding of the other.
  • Proven experience in cloud environments, particularly AWS, including deployment, containerization and continuous integration practices.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts, align diverse stakeholders and guide teams toward sustainable solutions.
