Charge Nurse/ODP - INS Neuro Theatres

The Role

The Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow houses the Institute of Neurological Sciences, a specialist centre providing Neurosurgical and Maxillofacial services. The INS Theatre suite and Interventional areas are looking for a Band 6 Perioperative practitioner for our Neurosurgical team. The successful candidate will have the enthusiasm, determination and vision to work within the Neurosurgical senior team. The department consists of 7 theatres covering Neurosurgery and Maxillofacial specialties, alongside 2 interventional suites delivering complex image-guided procedures.

We have a dedicated neuro team working a variety of shift patterns. You should be an experienced Perioperative practitioner with at least relevant at band 5 level within a neurosurgical scrub role and have evidence of leadership experience. Experience in anaesthetics and/or Maxillofacial surgery would be desirable. The ability to work on your own initiative but also as part of an integrated team is required. You must have demonstrated the ability to work in a complex, multidisciplinary, clinical environment. You will have excellent leadership qualities and be an effective communicator. You must also have the skills to handle conflicting pressures professionally and calmly, and to work in a highly pressured environment while maintaining a can-do attitude. You will provide clinical leadership to deliver a positive, safe perioperative patient experience, with a desire to continually improve the service, whilst being part of a supportive team.

You are required to demonstrate flexibility by working in a service that runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Furthermore, you will be expected, where necessary, to engage in multi-site working within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde in order to meet the needs of the service. As part of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s pre-employment checking for all appointed candidates, evidence of current NMC/HCPC registration will be required prior to the start date. You should therefore note that candidates who are unable to provide confirmation of current NMC/HCPC registration by the projected start date for this post may not be shortlisted for interview. This post requires PVG Scheme Membership/Disclosure Scotland Check.

All roles will be assessed for sponsorship eligibility in line with current Home Office requirements. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) can only issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) where these are met.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

• This post will be based at the Institute of Neurological Sciences, Queen Elizabeth University Hospital
• Full-time Contract (36 hours per week)
• Permanent post
• These hours are worked on Early/Late/weekend/on call

Key Responsibilities

• Provide clinical leadership for the assessment of patient needs, implementation and evaluation of programmes of person-centred care which are evidence based. Utilising all available resources taking into consideration the lifestyle, gender and cultural background and ensure involvement with the patient, family, carers and significant others.
• Maintain patient records in line with NMC guidelines for records and record keeping.
• Contribute to provision and monitoring a safe, clinical environment.
• Practice within the legal & Ethical framework as established by Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) and National Legislation to ensure patient interests and wellbeing are met
• Work within the National Health Service (NHS), NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde and Health & Safety Executive (HSE) Legislation, Policy, Guidelines and Procedures.
• Empower patients to take responsibility for their health, well-being and future lifestyle by practising in an open transparent and inclusive manner, thereby ensuring patients have the relevant information to participate in decisions about their care
• Ensures effective management of resources including stores supplies, pharmacy and maintenance of equipment.
• Lead and develop the nurses in the team and support the MDT o In conjunction with the SCN ensure that the nursing resource is utilised efficiently and effectively by managing duty roster/ sickness absence and the use of additional hours i.e. bank
• Participate in the recruitment and selection process. o Share personal professional objectives with staff and participate in the KSF and PDP process.
• Contribute to the wider corporate agenda.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

• First Level Registered Nurse registered with the NMC or ODP registered with the HCPC with post registration experience.
• Educated to degree level is desirable
• Evidence of continuing professional development is esesntial
• Post registration qualification/significant relevant experience in specialty is desirable
• Ability to fulfil criteria outlined in the job description.
• Excellent leadership and communication skills
