The Opportunity The Solid Waste Operations Branch is a branch within the Waste Management and Environmental Sustainability Department. This branch is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the City's Landfill site, which includes non-hazardous solid waste disposal, household hazardous waste receiving and disposal, leaf and yard waste disposal and composting, and solid waste collection and disposal. Responsibilities also include the operation of the scalehouse, which is the first point of contact for customers and waste entering the landfill site. Under the general guidance and direction of the Supervisor of Solid Waste Receiving, the Waste Receiving Attendant position within the Solid Waste Operations Branch provides compliance related support for the Environmental Centre namely the Recycling Depot and the Waste and Recycling Depot with a focus on superior customer service and effective waste diversion. Specifically, this position is responsible for greeting customers, inspecting waste intended for drop-off, receiving and ensuring the accurate separation of waste in accordance with Environmental Compliance Approval issued to the City of Barrie and relevant legislation and regulations. Overall, this position plays an integral role in the City's ability to increase the facility's waste diversion rate and continually meet or exceed waste management objectives within the City of Barrie Sustainable Waste Management Strategy. • One (1) year post-secondary Certificate in Environmental Technician, Equipment Operator, Material Management or related
• Certified Forklift Operator for the following types of forklifts: Class 1, 2, 4, and 5

Experience

• One (1) year experience performing duties related to the above-mentioned major responsibilities
• Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining a Forklift Truck
• Demonstrated customer service experience
• Previous waste management would be an asset

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

• General knowledge of the following legislation, regulations, or requirements: provincial environmental protection legislation and related environmental compliance approvals including the Regulation 347: General Waste Management
• Demonstrated ability to:
  • operate various motorized equipment such as a power tailgate truck and utility vehicles
  • exert effort to perform physical tasks such as standing, walking, stooping, kneeling and crouching frequently
  • exert effort lift, push, pull, or carry objects weighing up to 30 kg regularly
• Intermediate skills include: Customer Service; Interpersonal; Organizational; Verbal Communication; Written Communication

Conditions of Employment

• Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver's License in good standing
• Satisfactory Criminal Record Check*

Other Important Information

Location: Environmental Centre, 272 Ferndale Drive North, Barrie Hours: The normal hours of work are up to and including 24 hours per week with a varying schedule to support business demand. Wage: This is a permanent part-time non-union position with the following 2024 pay range:

• Hourly Pay Rate: $22.11 to $30.08
