Position Overview:

We are seeking a permanent Modeling and Studies Engineer to join our Grid Infrastructure Planning Department in Winnipeg, Manitoba. 

Responsibilities:

• Perform planning studies and make recommendations related to the development of Manitoba Hydro's HVDC system, including the Northern Collector System and the interface to the southern AC system. Studies would include general concepts, ratings, and controls, and would be executed on load flow, stability, and EMT type software programs.
• Assist and conduct feasibility studies, technical study work, and preparation of, and coordination of, Capital Project Justifications, Single Line Diagrams, and concept descriptions, related to the HVDC modernization project and other capital projects.
• Conduct simulations to analyze the performance and reliability of the AC/DC system under various current and potential future operating scenarios and provide actionable insights to project teams.
• Provide technical support to the engineering or project teams, to facilitate decision making, determination of specifications, and problem-solving.
• Lead or assist the development and preparation of vendor study models of PSSE, DSA tools, PSCAD and RTDS for various capital projects.
• Review and evaluate technical studies and reports, from consultants, vendors and manage and coordinate responses to the project teams, consultants, and vendors.
• Assist with reliability evaluations and NERC related activity on HVDC equipment.
• Prepare reports and perform presentations to other departments on planning studies.
• Stay abreast of advancements in HVDC modelling and simulation techniques, software tools, industry best practices, and grid code, and apply them to enhance project outcomes.
• Liaise with outside agencies such as the Manitoba Hydro International and the university and serve on internal/external task forces and working groups.

Qualifications:

• Must be a graduate in Electrical Engineering from a University of recognized standing with a minimum of six years related engineering experience. 
• A Masters' degree and/or post-graduate courses in power system dynamics, power system analysis, control, and protection, HVDC systems, and FACTS devices would be an asset.
• Must obtain and maintain a current Personnel Risk Assessment and a "Clear" security rating in accordance with Manitoba Hydro policy P513. 
• Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Training is required and must be completed prior to transfer date and renewed annually. 
• Professional member in good standing with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (or willingness and ability to attain within a specified amount of time.
• Advanced understanding of control systems theory and applications, general understanding of AC systems, HVDC systems , generator operation, and the interconnections. Aptitude to learn the specifics of the Manitoba Hydro grid and planning aspects.
• Knowledge of power system dynamics such as power system transient stability, frequency stability, voltage stability and control.
• Demostrated proficiency using computer programs intended for power system simulation such as PSS/E load flow and transient analysis, DSA PowerTools, PSCAD/EMTDC, RTDS, Mathcad, MATLAB.
• Ability to develop and present complex issues in a clear, concise, and effective manner.
• Ability to establish and maintain successful working relationships with internal and external groups.
• Aptitude for carrying out open ended investigative type studies with supervision.
• Ability to schedule and complete work with minimum supervision.
• Possess a valid Province of Manitoba Driver's Licence.

Salary Range

Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $48.74-$60.48 Hourly, $93,398.24-$128,947.78 Annually.
