Engineer - NERC and Power System Studies

Role Overview

When you join our team, you’ll mainly be involved in NERC compliance studies for modelling and assessing the dynamic performance of generation facilities connected to North American power systems. You will support projects from defining requirements to delivering reports, including onsite testing, modelling, results analysis and technical recommendations. You’ll work with a team specialized in power systems, stability, integration of power generation facilities and regulatory compliance, and help ensure the quality of our services and maintain trusting relationships with our clients.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out NERC compliance studies, specifically in accordance with MOD-025, MOD-026, MOD-027 and MOD-032 standards; develop, validate and calibrate dynamic models of generation equipment, and perform the required system studies, including load flow, short‑circuit and stability.
  • Analyze field tests, performance data and system disturbances to validate models and evaluate the behaviour of hydroelectric, wind, solar and industrial facilities.
  • Prepare compliance documentation, run required simulations using tools such as PSS®E, work with clients and stakeholders, and write and deliver technical reports.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, eligible to become a professional engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada.
  • At least five years of experience in power systems, including NERC compliance, validation of dynamic models or stability studies.
  • Knowledge of power system simulation software, such as PSS®E and CYME.
  • Knowledge of transient and dynamic stability studies, as well as generator and converter control systems.
  • Understanding of control parameters, transfer functions and control diagrams.
  • Knowledge of NERC standards MOD-025, MOD-026, MOD-027 and MOD-032, as well as generator interconnection requirements.
  • Knowledge of North American transmission systems and generator interconnection requirements.
  • Available to work at client sites in Québec and across Canada.
  • Advanced English skills to facilitate collaboration with other BBA offices and/or clients in English‑speaking Canadian provinces and internationally; you may need to use English occasionally or daily, depending on current projects.
  • Advanced French skills to facilitate collaboration with other BBA offices and/or clients in Québec.
  • Asset: master’s degree or doctorate in electrical engineering.
  • Asset: a diploma from the Institut en génie de l’énergie électrique (IGEE).
  • Asset: experience working with renewable energy producers or power transmission operators.
  • Asset: knowledge of AI tools applied to engineering.
