Responsibilities

This newly established strategic position within Memorial University's Pension Services Office will play a key role in leading the financial accounting activities for the University's pension plan. This leadership position provides comprehensive oversight of financial accounting and administrative operations supporting the University's 2.4 billion-dollar defined benefit pension plan. Reporting to the Director, Pension Services, the Manager is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of financial reporting for the pension plan, including the preparation of annual audited financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). The incumbent oversees all financial aspects of pension plan operations, including investment income reporting, asset and liability recognition, journal entries, reconciliations, and the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial schedules. The Manager also prepares detailed statistical, fiscal, and analytical reports to support senior leadership and conducts internal auditing functions to evaluate workflow processes, ensuring effective internal controls and enhanced financial operations. Additional responsibilities include planning and coordinating financial activities, supervising staff, evaluating workflow systems, and implementing improvements to optimize service delivery across the unit. The role also requires oversight of pension plan cash flows, including contributions, benefit payments, rebalancing‑related flows, and other financial transactions, while ensuring proper monitoring and maintenance of financial commitments in the University's financial systems. The Manager develops and monitors annual budgets and multi‑year financial forecasts for pension operations, conducts financial analyses to support long‑range sustainability, and provides strategic advice on revenue, expenditure patterns, and financial policy development. They also collaborate with Human Resources, central Finance, and other academic and administrative units on matters regarding financial systems, policies, and reporting. The role includes preparing materials for internal committees, participating in administrative planning, supporting policy and procedure development, and contributing to the implementation of operational improvements affecting the pension plan. Additionally, the incumbent provides leadership in staff supervision, performance management, workload planning, professional development, and administrative continuity planning.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have 5–8 years of progressive experience in financial accounting, financial operations, or administrative financial management, preferably within a large, complex institution or public accounting firm. A graduate degree in business administration, economics, or finance is required; however, an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. A CPA designation is required. Candidates must demonstrate strong experience interpreting and applying GAAP, preparing complex financial statements, and designing and maintaining effective internal controls. Experience in budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, workflow evaluation, and operational planning is essential. The successful applicant will have strong analytical, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, along with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders including auditors, actuaries, and administrative leaders.

Salary

$82,417 – 105,534 per annum (Management and Professional)
