Community Crisis Worker

Job Responsibility:

Based at Millennium Library, the Community Crisis Worker team resolves challenging customer behaviour issues and helps create a safe and welcoming environment for all library users. This position will provide short-term assistance and referrals to resolve situations and provide support to vulnerable individuals. Lived experience within a First Nation, Métis or Inuit Community is considered an asset for this role.

As the Community Crisis Worker, you will:

• Work as an integral part of the Community Crisis Worker team to create a comfortable, welcoming environment within the library system including in the Community Connections space, bringing ideas on improvements to the Administrative Coordinator.
• Work with library administration, library staff, contracted Community Safety Hosts and security and other agencies to create a safe environment for all library users and employees.
• Lead or assist in de-escalating volatile situations if and when they occur, equally prioritizing staff and client safety.
• Provide immediate short-term assistance, resource coordination, and referral to resolve emergent situations and provide support to vulnerable individuals.
• Provide follow-up on initial connections to agencies and services to meet the assessed needs, as required. This may include referring individuals to shelter, mental health, employment, training or other opportunities in the community.
• Keep current in the area of professional expertise and provide information, reports, and statistics related to vulnerable customers.
• Provide training for Library staff and security working with vulnerable customers.
• Assist in maintaining the booking schedule for Community Connections space to bring in a rotation of visiting external agencies for vulnerable customers.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other support agencies, departments and organizations that provide service to vulnerable customers.
• Conduct library site visits, as needed, to provide advice and expertise.
• Participate in various committees and working groups as required.
• Act as back-up within the library's Community Crisis team, to provide adequate coverage of the Community Connections space and within library facilities.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date files, including summaries and statistical reports as required, using library provided software.
• Perform other duties consistent with the classification as required

Your education and qualifications include:

1. Bachelor of Social Work Degree. 2. Three (3) years of experience working in the social work field. 3. Knowledge and experience in the area of community support and development. 4. Thorough knowledge of other social service programs and community resources and experience working collaboratively with other agencies and disciplines. 5. Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts, and the public, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Policy. 6. Demonstrated strong commitment to the profession of social work, the Canadian Association of Social Work (CASW) Code of Ethics and the Manitoba College of Social Workers Standards of Practice. 7. Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task in a stressful environment. 8. Strong verbal and written communication skills. 9. The ability to exercise independent, professional judgment within the parameters of delegated authority. 10. Knowledge of computers and the ability to use Microsoft Office/Office365 in daily work. 11. Experience in training, public speaking, or the preparation and delivery of presentations, is considered an asset. 12. Project management skills is considered an asset. 13. Possessing a valid Class 5 driver's license is considered an asset. 14. Lived experience within a First Nation, Métis or Inuit Community is considered an asset. 15. Ability to communicate in both Official Languages is considered an asset.
