Unit Manager

AHS has an exciting opportunity for a Rural Acute Care & Emergency (RACE) Manager at the Olds Hospital & Care Centre, providing leadership and operational management for Acute Care Inpatients, Obstetrics, and the Emergency Department. You will support a dynamic healthcare team delivering care to a diverse rural population while advancing the AHS Patient First and Our People strategies. In this role, you are accountable for delivering high-quality, accessible, sustainable, patient- and family-focused care to the community of Olds and surrounding area. Strong communication, change management, human resource, and budget management skills are essential. As part of the Central Corridor Rural Acute leadership team, you will advance quality improvement, patient care, and staff engagement through collaborative relationships with colleagues, staff, community agencies, and regional services. You will lead recruitment and performance management in a unionized environment. Reporting to the Site Lead, and working with the Rural Lead, you will provide staff and program leadership through consistent practice, demonstrated leadership competence, commitment to the team, and alignment with the portfolio and organizational vision. Located on Treaty 7 territory just off the QEII between Calgary and Red Deer, the Olds Hospital & Care Centre is a key access point for surgical, obstetric, emergency, and medical care. Olds is a growing, vibrant community near the Rocky Mountains, home to a renowned post-secondary institution specializing in agricultural research. Residents enjoy mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, camping, and other outdoor recreation nearby. The OHCC is a full-service, 31-bed acute care hospital offering obstetrics, emergency, surgery, palliative, and medical/surgical services, with on-site hemodialysis, allied health, and diagnostic services.

Responsible for leadership, key decision-making, monitoring and maintaining clinical standards, and ensuring consistency in the delivery of patient- and family-centered care, this role is committed to providing high-quality services aligned with AHS values. Key responsibilities include recruiting staff to meet operational needs, managing performance, promoting team development, and establishing effective working relationships with multidisciplinary teams and other departments to achieve organizational goals. A culture of continuous quality improvement is fostered through monitoring and evaluating services, coordinating staff education and development, including orientation, ongoing training, just-in-time learning, coaching, and mentoring. Accountability also includes managing the operating budget, planning and allocating resources, authorizing and controlling expenditures, and ensuring effective stewardship of resources within the assigned portfolio. Working collaboratively with the Site Lead, Rural Lead, and other departments, the role coordinates staffing and clinical activities in accordance with AHS policies and procedures to support safe, effective, and efficient patient care.

Required Qualifications

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Minimum three (3) years, within the last five (5) years, acute care nursing experience. Minimum one (1) years' experience working in a leadership capacity (i.e.: Clinical Resource Nurse, Team Lead, Clinical Educator, Nurse Clinician). Active practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). A demonstrated clear pattern of professional development (e.g. continuing education courses).

Additional Required Qualifications

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as well as demonstrated effective problem solving. Demonstrated ability and comfort with decision-making responsibilities, coaching and teaching, and the ability to inspire and build confidence in others. Ability to foster relationships across the organization to further the effectiveness of both the site(s) managed and programs contained within Knowledge and understanding of collective agreements and working with a unionized workforce. Discretion with sensitive situations, data and personnel.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience leading healthcare teams & providing innovative solutions to complex system issues. Proven coaching skills to support team members to reach their full potential. Ability to work hard, have fun & contribute to a dynamic, successful healthcare team. 5 years’ experience in a management role, ideally in an organization of significant size, complexity and diversity. Strong knowledge of Rural Acute Care, Emergency, Labour & Delivery, Surgical Services & their corresponding complexities.
