Speech Language Pathologist - Provincial School Outreach

NATURE OF THE ASSIGNMENT

Provincial School Outreach (PSO) is a program funded by the Ministry of Education and Child Care and hosted by North Vancouver School District. Its central office is located at Mountainside Secondary but many of its team members reside outside of the Lower Mainland. The program provides specialized in-person and virtual-educational services to school districts across British Columbia, especially those located in rural and remote regions. PSO’s specialists travel on an ongoing basis to schools throughout the province to provide direct and indirect services to students and classrooms. The supports offered can be universal, targeted, or intensive in nature and may include assessment and individualized support planning for students with disabilities and diverse abilities. Specialists remain virtually connected to school and district personnel between in-person visits to provide ongoing consultation and support.

The program is seeking to fill either a part-time or full-time speech language pathologist position. The successful applicant will travel on their own or along with other PSO personnel to rural and remote communities. A part-time position involves travelling for one full week per month and a full-time position involves travelling up to two full weeks each month. The remainder of the assignment involves providing virtual-educational services. Because the program receives referrals on an ongoing basis, an outreach location may not be determined until several weeks prior to departure. Due to limited flight availability to some rural and remote communities, outreach may occasionally involve travel on a weekend or holiday.

PSO personnel are strongly committed to serving the immediate and long-term needs of schools by providing direct and indirect services to students and classrooms in whatever capacity is needed. The specialized support provided by PSO is customized to the unique context of every referral. Accordingly, this position differs in nature from a conventional school-based specialist assignment. Flexibility and innovation are essential as specialists can expect circumstances at the school to change with little or no advance notice due to any number of factors, including staff shortages. This can result in occasions when specialists need to adapt how they support students and the school during an in-person visit. For circumstances in which a student is not attending school for whatever reason, PSO specialists will discuss with the family the possibility of visiting the home to provide support and/or carry out an assessment. Building strong relationships with students, families, and staff during in-person visits is foundational to PSO’s mandate and requires its team members to be responsive, innovative, flexible, and willing to authentically engage in reciprocal learning with school and district personnel in small communities across British Columbia. The successful applicant understands the unique context of working in remote and rural regions of the province and meaningfully supporting students and families of Indigenous ancestry.

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS

·          A Master's Degree in Speech and Language Pathology.

·          Registered membership with the College of Speech and Hearing Health Professionals of BC (CSHHPBC).

·          Ability to conduct assessments and design interventions for a wide variety of speech and language services

·          Successful experience working with children who require significant level of support in communication.

·          Successful experience establishing strong home-school partnerships to support students and their families.

·          Successful experience in assisting with the development and implementation of Individual Education Plans.

·          Strong communication skills as evidenced with parents, teacher and other School Based Resource Team members.

·          Experience developing online resources to support students.

·          Experience working in remote and rural communities and supporting Indigenous students and families.

·          Ability to take a trauma informed approach to supporting students and their families.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

·          Successful experience in the use of augmentative and assistive technologies, including SETBC applications.

·          Knowledge of the K-12 curriculum and successful experience working in the public school system.

·          Willingness to be involved in professional development, with an ongoing commitment to learn and implement new methodologies and strategies.

·          Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, parents, and staff to enhance the school as a learning community
