Job Summary

Free Play for Kids is looking for a dedicated and energetic individual to join our team as the Wolves Basketball Program Coordinatorand Head Coach on a contract basis. In this role, you will be responsible for planning, developing, and executing developmental leagues, game days and tournaments while ensuring a positive and enriching experience for all participants.

This role demands excellent leadership and organizational abilities, along with a genuine enthusiasm for fostering a positive and engaging basketball environment. The position involves overseeing league operations, coordinating events, leading in-school presentations and sessions to drive team registrations, and delivering top-notch experiences for participants of all ages and skill levels.

The successful candidate will serve as the consistent Head Coach for both the girls' and boys' teams across all practices and games, and will be responsible for managing weekly tournaments, as well as forming and registering teams for the spring basketball league — fielding U13 Girls, U13 Boys, U15 Girls, and U15 Boys teams — and a fall developmental league, while ensuring all activities are delivered to the highest standard.

Education & Qualifications

A degree or diploma in Sports Management, Recreation, Physical Education, or a related field.

Prior experience in sports program coordination, particularly in Basketball.

Strong understanding of Basketball rules, strategies, and coaching techniques.

Standard First Aid Certification and CPR training or ability to obtain quickly.

Ability to work flexible hours, including daytime hours for in-school presentations and registration sessions, as well as evenings and weekends for practices, games, and tournaments.

Ability to travel to multiple locations across Edmonton within a single work day.

Valid driver's license with a reliable vehicle.

Clear up-to-date Criminal and Vulnerable Sector check.

Responsibilities

Leading in-school presentations and sessions to promote the program and drive team registrations.

Serving as the consistent Head Coach for both the girls' and boys' teams, leading all practices and games.

Develop and build four teams — U13 Girls, U13 Boys, U15 Girls, and U15 Boys — each running two practices and two games per week for the EYBA spring league.

Planning and organizing basketball tournaments, including scheduling games, securing venues and coordinating staff and volunteers.

Developing tournament brackets and ensuring smooth operation of all games.

Managing event logistics, including registration, equipment, and post-tournament evaluations.

Developing and implementing a structured basketball program focusing on skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Coordinating program logistics such as scheduling, participant registration, and communication.

Overseeing coaches and volunteers, ensuring they deliver high-quality training sessions.

Designing and leading a developmental basketball league aimed at enhancing players' skills and knowledge of the game.

Fostering a supportive environment for player growth, providing feedback and support to coaches and participants.

Maintaining accurate records of all programs, including participant data, attendance, and program evaluations.

Serving as the primary point of contact for participants, parents, coaches, and volunteers.

Promoting programs and events through In school sessions, and community outreach.

Addressing participant inquiries and resolving any issues promptly and professionally.

Ensuring all programs adhere to safety guidelines and organizational policies.

Conducting regular safety checks and reporting any incidents or concerns to management.

Position Conditions

This is a part-time, contract-based position of up to 25 hours per week.

Hours will include a mix of daytime hours (for in-school presentations and registration sessions) and evenings/weekends (for practices, games, and tournaments), depending on program schedules.

Ability to travel to multiple locations across Edmonton during a single work day is required.

The potential for contract renewal is dependent on program outcomes and organizational needs.

The job is performed in schools and recreation settings, but work settings may vary depending on the project.
