Manufacturing Engineer - Automotive - Nanaimo

Primary Responsibilities

  • Identify and execute solutions related to process flow within the plant by applying manufacturing engineering principles to improve efficiencies (Pareto, time studies, design experiments, problem‑solving tools, labor balancing).
  • Perform current program feasibility studies to determine optimal processes and create machine specifications, source safe equipment and safe solutions working with cross‑functional teams internally and/or externally.
  • Perform capacity, capability and feasibility studies to determine viability of new capital equipment purchases and assist with new product development.
  • Take an active role in APQP, helping to develop process flow by applying Lean Manufacturing principles, PFMEAs, equipment and tooling specifications.
  • Implement corrective actions and mistake‑proofing (poke yoke).
  • Assist and implement engineering changes and process changes with cross‑functional teams.
  • Develop and maintain BOMs and process routing to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
  • Perform layered process audits and standard work audits adhering to the posted schedule.
  • Source and requisition tools and materials for process improvement, spare and use as required.
  • Create and replace all poke yoke parts.
  • Define part trial run (PTR) requirements with cross‑functional teams and complete PTRs through production.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and support PSHSR and other safety requirements for equipment/process during new procurement or any changes.
  • Complete machine buy‑offs, performing all necessary activities for the buy‑off.
  • Update and maintain tooling drawings using SolidWorks.
  • Assist the maintenance department with troubleshooting tooling/processes to fulfill customer demand on time.
  • Initiate actions to prevent nonconformities relating to EMS and ISO14001:2015.

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years’ experience in a high‑volume manufacturer, preferably automotive.
  • Post‑secondary education in engineering (mechanical or manufacturing).
  • Related engineering designation an asset (industrial or manufacturing).
  • Practical knowledge of manufacturing quality management systems.
  • Experience with 3D and 2D CAD modeling software to optimize plant and cell layout.
  • Process knowledge of APQP and PPAP elements and deliverables for manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated progressive knowledge of manufacturing principles, understanding process flow and opportunities for improvement.
  • Practical experience with measuring devices and gauge design (gauge R&R, gauges).
  • Familiarity with industry‑accepted problem‑solving and failure analysis methodologies (PFMEA, fishbone, 8D).
  • Practical knowledge of ERP systems for purposes of completing and updating BOMs.
  • Knowledge of GD&T with the ability to transfer to each stage of the process flow.
  • Theoretical knowledge of automation (robotics, PLC) to monitor new and existing automation to ensure efficiency.
  • Experience with metal forming and brazing an asset.
  • Demonstrated progressive experience with Lean Manufacturing (value stream and process mapping, work balancing).
