CASUAL OVERNIGHT REGISTERED NURSE or REGISTERED PRACTICAL NURSE - COMMUNITY - PRIVATE HOME
Loving family moving to Oshawa (Harmony and King) area seeking a qualified RPN and/or RN to care for their 6 year old medically complex child and 4 year old sibling for overnight and some evening and day shifts.
Family provides a welcoming, supportive, comfortable and organized setting and seeks to minimize exposure to infection to all members in their circle of care.

General Requirements:
- Nursing degree (RN) ord diploma (RPN) from a recognized college or university
- Current RN or RPN registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Fluency in English
- Clinical competence and current knowledge base through continued education and lifelong learning.
- Highly motivated with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Demonstrated strong problem solving and critical thinking skills
- Ability to work independently and in an interdisciplinary team setting
- Excellent attention to detail and efficient time management skills

- Current Standard First Aid and CPR Certificate Level C or HCP
- Police Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening for Employment
- Two Step TB Test and up to date immunizations
- Sick Kids Tracheostomy training course (To be completed as a part of training)
- $2M in Commercial General Liability Insurance, and
- $25,000 in Abuse Liability in relation to actual or threatened sexual, physical, psychological, mental and/or emotional abuse, molestation or harassment, including corporal punishment (Complete as a part of onboarding process)
Specific Client Requirements
- Physical ability and willingness to lift clients in and out of the the bed, and up and down stairs as necessary. (Clients are able to walk but require assistance on the stairs).
- Physical ability and willingness to transport client and client's equipment from to and from vehicle as necessary
- Tracheostomy care
- GTube Feeding
- Oral Feeding
- Personal care
- Medicine administration
- Integration of speech, occupational and physiotherapy plans into general care
- Involvement in family team meetings with nursery school interdisciplinary team (if patient returns to school)
- Assistance with medical equipment cleaning/maintenance medical supply inventory and monitoring (during overnight shifts or during shifts when client is at home)
Preferred/Optional
- Tracheostomy and GTube Experience
- Experience in acute care setting, preferably in an intensive care unit or an emergency department.
- Reliable access to a vehicle
Current Schedule (At least four over night shifts including weekends, every two weeks - we can potentially settle on specific days if they work with the rest of our team).
There will be other occasional shifts scheduled based on patient/family needs and if nurse is available. We may also need additional support to cover night shifts when other nurses are ill or on vacation. There are potential opportunities for travel if interested.
Please note, shifts will not typically be cancelled due to client illness. The shifts will just be completed in the home or hospital if an admission is necessary (pending hospital protocol and safety of hospital).
Compensation
Independent Contractors
Family welcomes independent contractors who meet the above criteria and the following criteria. (Client family can offer support to get the applicant setup as an independent contractor).
- The independent contractor is at least 18 .
- The independent contractor maintains the amount of professional liability insurance required by their regulatory college in addition to requirements listed above. (Family can assist with this)
- The independent contractor pays WSIB Premiums (the premiums required under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, 1994) for workplace insurance, where applicable.
- The independent contractor pays both the employer and employee portions of CPP Contributions (the contributions required under the Canada Pension Plan (Canada).
Salary: Alternately - There is a possibility that nurses can go on payroll but note that salary and all deductions will be included from the rates below.

Hourly Rate:
$50.00 /hour (RN)
$45.00 /hour (RPN)
- Free parking available at client home
- Any parking incurred for hospital, appointment, or occasional shifts will be reimbursed by the family at 50%.
- Any travel required beyond 40km from clients home compensated based on driving time needed or mileage. Will be negotiated on a per event basis.
- PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU MUST PROVIDE THE MAJORITY OF YOUR OWN PPE (see safety protocols below)
COVID-19 Safety Protocols (vary with severity of covid and nurse's overall exposure to people. The protocols noted below have relaxed but we are listing them here in case there is a need to return to them.
In the event of a high risk or Covid or any other serious communicable respiratory infection or otherwise:
We ask that nurses put on ALL masks at the front door or ideally right after they enter the home (at the front door).
We do not want nurses wearing the same mask in the house that they have worn in transit to our home.
Additional Covid protocol when risk of covid is high:
We recognize there is a shortage in PPE and so alternately, nurses can bring a freshly washed set of clothing to change into in the bathroom once they have arrived. We are not requiring them to wear scrubs, the clothing just needs to be freshly washed, (unworn) and not worn in transit to our home regardless of where they are coming from.
We also follow these recommendations from our son's Nurse Practitioner at Sick Kids.
We recommend excellent hand hygiene. We have stressed that nurses cannot visit children if they have signs of the illness or have had contact with someone who has symptoms or travel history for the past 14 days outside of Canada. All nurses need to self-screen before any visit and they need to be practicing social distancing and screening other clients and family members they come into contact with."

TRAINING TO BE COMPLETE in mid to late June. Training includes a minimum of 7hrs with the family at home (Oshawa) and various locations in the GTA in addition to a minimum of 5hrs of Sick Kids Pediatric Tracheostomy Training. Sick Kids training is partially remote. Training hours are not guaranteed to be paid. It is pending the LHIN's willingness to support training.
