NATURE OF WORK

Performs semi-skilled, skilled, and administrative work in maintaining light duty vehicles, mobile equipment, emergency equipment, small equipment and other miscellaneous mechanical equipment for the organization.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the supervision of assigned supervisor/manager within applicable department. Ability to perform the work under minimal supervision.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Will provide instruction, direction, information and/or supervision of other employees and contractors as designated.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Plan, carry out, and evaluate preventive maintenance schedules for all light duty vehicles, mobile equipment, emergency equipment, small equipment and other miscellaneous mechanical equipment, either personally or through outside vendors.
• Operate a variety of diagnostic instruments and hand, electric, and air-driven tools.
• Test, service, and repair light duty vehicles, mobile equipment, emergency equipment, small equipment and miscellaneous mechanical equipment.
• Inspect, adjust, and replace necessary units and related parts during repair and maintenance work.
• Repair brake, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies, and related systems.
• Cut and weld metal, and perform body repair, touch-up, and related work.
• Evaluate the condition of light duty vehicles, mobile equipment, emergency equipment small equipment and miscellaneous mechanical equipment and perform or schedule necessary repairs.
• Conduct analyses and inspections to determine the most cost-effective maintenance, repair, or replacement strategies.
• Develop shop procedures and prepare budget data related to maintenance and repair activities.
• Purchase equipment, parts, and supplies used for vehicle and mechanical system maintenance.
• Provide field assistance to disabled equipment as required including on an emergency basis.
• Contributes to a positive work environment by modelling a respectful workplace, as per City policy.
• Takes reasonable care to protect the health and safety of themselves and the health and safety of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work. Properly wears protective clothing, devises and equipment provided, and ensures hazards are immediately reported to supervisors. Complies with the City of Fort St John’s Occupational Health and Safety program and all applicable polices and procedures.

REQUIRED SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS & REGISTRATIONS

• Completion of Grade 12 education or GED, or equivalent
• Valid B.C. or Interprovincial Red Seal Heavy Duty Equipment Technician and (2) years’ experience in related work in the following fields of Truck and Transport or Automotive Service or;
• Valid B.C. or Interprovincial Red Seal Truck and Transport Technician and (2) years’ experience in related work in the following fields of Heavy Duty Equipment or Automotive Service or;
• Valid B.C. or Interprovincial Red Automotive Service Technician and (2) years’ experience in related work in the following fields of Heavy Duty Equipment or Truck and Transport.
• Minimum (8) years' of related mechanical experience including apprenticeship.
• Valid Class 3 B.C. Drivers License with Air Endorsement
• Authorized vehicle inspector with air brake training, and CVIP Inspections
• Considerable knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, fire pumps and valves, generators, and welding.
• Working knowledge of LPG operating systems.
• Working knowledge of hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities.
• Working knowledge of modern equipment maintenance practices, methods, materials, and tools.
• Skill in operating standard tools and equipment used in mechanical repair.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective preventive maintenance programs, policies, and procedures.
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, vendors, and the public.
• Ability to operate heavy equipment for testing and diagnostic purposes.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Motorized vehicles for mechanical testing; power and hand tools; mechanic’s tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, and air tools; electronic diagnostic equipment; personal computer, calculator, phone; mobile or portable radio.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that an employee must meet to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The ability to exert continuous physical effort and to work in fatiguing positions (e.g. bending, kneeling). Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time and lift, push, pull and/or move up to 25 kg.

WORK ENVIROMENT

Work involves frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts and outdoor weather conditions. Occasional exposure to wet or humid conditions, fumes, and toxic or caustic chemicals. Employees must frequently lift up to 25 kg and occasionally up to 50 kg. Vision requirements include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Noise levels are moderately noisy.
