Primary Function

The Welder–Fitter / Structural Steel Installer / Industrial Millwright is a multi‑skilled trades professional responsible for fabricating metal components in the shop, installing structural steel and miscellaneous metals in the field, and performing industrial mechanical millwrighting duties across various project sites. This role ensures high‑quality fabrication, safe and precise installation, and reliable mechanical performance of industrial equipment and structural assemblies.

This hybrid role is ideal for a versatile tradesperson who enjoys variety, problem-solving, and hands-on work across fabrication, installation, and mechanical maintenance. The successful candidate will contribute to high-quality shop production, safe and efficient field installations, and reliable mechanical performance for industrial clients.

The incumbent may be required to work both Day (6:00 am to 2:30 pm) and Afternoon (2:30 pm to 1:00 am) shifts.  Out of town travel could be required and occasionally for extended periods of time.

Key Responsibilities

Shop Welding & Fitting

• Fabricate metal components, assemblies, and custom parts using MIG, TIG, and stick welding processes.
• Read and interpret blueprints, fabrication drawings, and welding symbols to determine layout, measurements, and material requirements.
• Fit, tack, and weld structural and miscellaneous metal components with precision and adherence to tolerances.
• Operate fabrication equipment including cutting torches, plasma cutters, ironworkers, drill presses, and grinders.
• Conduct quality checks to ensure weld integrity, dimensional accuracy, and compliance with shop standards.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment.

Structural Steel & Miscellaneous Metals Installation (Field Work)

• Install structural steel beams, columns, joists, stairs, railings, platforms, and miscellaneous metal components on construction sites.
• Perform rigging, hoisting, and material handling using cranes, lifts, and rigging hardware.
• Align, bolt-up, weld, and secure structural components according to engineered drawings and site specifications.
• Collaborate with site supervisors, general contractors, and other trades to coordinate installation sequencing.
• Conduct field measurements, adjustments, and modifications as required.
• Follow all site safety protocols, including fall protection, lockout/tagout, and equipment operation procedures.

Industrial Mechanical Millwrighting

• Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair industrial machinery, mechanical systems, and production equipment.
• Perform precision alignment of motors, pumps, conveyors, gearboxes, and rotating equipment using dial indicators or laser alignment tools.
• Diagnose mechanical failures and perform corrective repairs, part replacements, and system adjustments.
• Assemble and install mechanical components such as bearings, shafts, couplings, belts, and hydraulic/pneumatic systems.
• Conduct preventive maintenance tasks to reduce downtime and extend equipment life.
• Support shutdowns, equipment upgrades, and plant modifications as required.

Required Skills & Competencies

• Strong proficiency in welding (MIG/TIG/SMAW) and metal fabrication techniques.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints , fabrication drawings, and mechanical schematics.
• Skilled in rigging, hoisting, and safe material handling .
• Solid understanding of structural steel installation practices , including bolting, welding, and alignment.
• Mechanical aptitude with experience in industrial equipment installation, troubleshooting, and repair .
• Competence with precision measurement tools (tape measures, squares, micrometers, dial indicators, laser alignment).
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to changing site conditions.
• Physical capability to lift heavy materials, work at heights, and perform physically demanding tasks.
• Commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and teamwork.

Qualifications

• Certification as a Welder (e.g., CWB) or equivalent experience.
• Relevant industrial mechanical experience considered an asset.
• Experience in structural steel installation or ironworking preferred.
• Valid driver’s licence; ability to travel to job sites.
• Working at Heights, WHMIS, and other safety certifications (or willingness to obtain).

Working Conditions

• Combination of shop-based fabrication and field installation on construction or industrial sites.
• Exposure to noise, heights, confined spaces, and varying weather conditions.
• Use of PPE including welding gear, fall protection, and safety equipment.
• Occasional overtime, shift work, or weekend work depending on project demands.
