Job Summary

The Commodity Purchaser is responsible for the flow of all assigned produce items both internally and externally procured from either domestic or imported sources. Primary duties and responsibilities for this position are securing a supply line to meet sales needs while maintaining profit margins assigned to those commodities.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Assist in researching, developing and sustaining relationships with growers and external vendor partners.
  • Responsible for settlements and negotiations for revised billings
  • Research market pricing and availability to procure product and safeguard profitability.
  • Analyze and report on market trends with sales department and senior management.
  • Evaluate daily product reports and collaborate with the commodities team to maintain acceptable inventory levels.
  • Manage the process for purchasing decisions and order fulfillment.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure all procured products meet set quality standards of the organization and regulatory bodies.
  • Communicate regularly with partners and growers to ensure compliance with food safety, food security and related regulatory requirements and ensure company standards are being met.
  • Develop and manage analytical tools as required.
  • Other core expectations as defined by the company.

Requirements and Skills

  • Post-secondary education is required; a degree or diploma in Purchasing, Supply Chain Management or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years' commodity purchasing experience in the produce or agriculture industry required.
  • Bilingual Spanish is an asset.
  • Proficient in Microsoft (MS) Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) required; knowledge of ERP software; FAMOUS® is preferred.
  • Capacity to engage with suppliers and build and retain relationships that align with company objectives.
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment, demonstrate keen attention to detail consistent follow-through skills.
  • Exceptional analytical and organizational skills are essential; results oriented with a demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize workflow.
  • Sound decision making skills and able to work in a high stress environment.
  • Understand the need for urgency while providing outstanding customer service.

Working conditions

  • Hours of work may vary depending on business needs; flexibility required.
  • Role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Specific vision capabilities required; the employee is to work in front of a computer, sitting for prolonged periods is required.
