Job DescriptionVacancy Status: This posting is for an existing vacancy within the organization and is open to new applications.
AI DisclosureAs part of the application process, Artificial Intelligence will be used in the hiring process for this role
Work ArrangementThis role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the office three days per week, at minimum.
The RoleThe Data Engineering organization at General Motors is building a unified Vehicle Data Platform that moves data and configuration between vehicle ECUs and the cloud. Our team is the only team within General Motors that delivers software on every compute module the company has. Our software is delivered as libraries, apps, and services on Android, Linux, and QNX and covers four areas. The control plane retrieves configuration from the cloud and applies it across the vehicle's ECUs. The data plane collects, processes, and forwards data from vehicle systems to cloud storage. The SDK lets application teams use the platform. The unified logging infrastructure manages logs across the vehicle software stack.
What You’ll Do (Responsibilities)
Set technical direction for the control plane (configuration, arbitration, lifecycle) and the data plane (streaming and file based transfer), and for how the two integrate.
Drive the technical direction of how we manage thousands of vehicles from a single control plane, including configuration distribution, version management, device identity, and remote diagnostics.
Design the unified logging infrastructure that manages logs across the vehicle software stack.
Define the SDK architecture, API design, versioning, and adoption approach for application teams across the vehicle software stack.
Set the approach for delivering the team's software on Android, Linux, and QNX across every General Motors compute module.
Design, implement, and maintain on vehicle software across these areas, and stay involved in the code through design work, code reviews, and prototyping.
Optimize data egress and configuration delivery over intermittent connectivity, the speed of convergence to new configuration, and the CPU and memory footprint on the target ECU.
Integrate with cloud services such as Azure, AWS S3, and Firestore for configuration delivery, device state reporting, and data egress.
Set standards for reliability, performance, data privacy, and resource use on production ECUs.
Define health metrics and observability for the software in production, and lead incident response, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
Lead initiatives across organizations with application, platform, cloud, cybersecurity, privacy, and DevOps teams to drive integration, alignment, and adoption.
Work with product stakeholders to define the SDK roadmap based on application team needs and fleet data requirements.
Report status, risks, and tradeoffs to leadership and partner teams.
Contribute to the open source community by reporting issues, contributing to documentation, and submitting patches.
Mentor senior and junior engineers, support team growth, and promote best practices within the software community.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
6+ years of hands on development experience in C, C++, and related languages.
Experience developing software for Linux, Android, and QNX platforms.
Understanding of distributed systems, configuration management, and large scale data pipelines.
Experience designing, developing, or operating a control plane, fleet management system, or other large scale distributed coordination service.
Experience designing logging or telemetry software for operational visibility at fleet scale.
Experience delivering SDKs or libraries used by other engineering teams, including API design, versioning, and adoption support.
Understanding of network communication and security protocols, including mTLS and certificate based device identity.
Familiarity with Autosar standards.
Experience leading initiatives across organizations.
Expertise in software development and optimization.
Experience troubleshooting issues in production environments.
Technical communication and design documentation skills, including presenting status, risks, and tradeoffs to leadership.
Has delivered software in a production environment and supported it once in the field.
What Can Give You a Competitive Advantage (Preferred Qualifications)
Familiarity with vehicle communication protocols (UDS, CAN, SOME/IP, XCP).
Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and their device management services (IoT Hub, IoT Core, Pub/Sub, or equivalent).
Familiarity with OpenTelemetry, protobuf, and gRPC.
Experience building fleet management, OTA, or remote configuration systems, and contributions to Fluent Bit or other data intensive open source projects.
Experience working with Firestore.
Knowledge of security best practices for device provisioning, configuration delivery, and authentication of cloud to device traffic.
Experience designing driver or HMI initiated capture flows, such as create and upload data.
Automotive domain familiarity: ECU architectures, SoC platforms, diagnostics, failure and crash analysis.
Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automation tools.
CompensationThe salary range for this role is $147,000 to $196,600. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
