Intellectual Property (IP) Analyst

What You’ll Do

• Work with engineers and R&D teams to identify and document new inventions through invention disclosure sessions.
• Conduct patent, trademark, and literature searches to evaluate novelty, freedom to operate, and competitive activity.
• Assist with preparing and filing patent applications, including drafting materials and supporting responses to office actions.
• Maintain accurate IP records, metrics, and filing status within internal systems.
• Monitor competitor patents, publications, and emerging trends in optics, imaging, and display technologies.
• Support invention harvesting and help develop plans to defend or strengthen Avalon’s IP portfolio.
• Review copyright, software license, and image-use agreements to ensure compliance.
• Contribute to internal IP awareness initiatives and promote a culture of innovation protection across teams.

What You’ ll Need to Be Successful

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or another relevant technical field.
• 2+ years of experience in intellectual property, patent analytics, or technical documentation.
• Strong analytical and research skills; you enjoy diving deep into complex technical subjects.
• Exceptional written communication skills; able to turn complex ideas into clear, concise language for technical and non-technical audiences.
• Familiarity with patent databases and IP management systems.
• A methodical, detail-oriented approach and a passion for learning new technologies.
• A collaborative and adaptable mindset; comfortable working in a fast-moving, innovative environment.

Bonus Points For

• Experience supporting patent prosecution or IP portfolio management.
• Knowledge of Canadian and U.S. patent law or IP processes.
• A genuine interest in optics, imaging, 3D display, or emerging visualization technologies.
