Overview

As a member of Physical Plant, this role supports the Grounds, Shipping and Housekeeping Departments.

  • This position will be posted until filled.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a wide variety of tasks within the Physical Plant, Grounds, and Shipping/Receiving, including support for electricians.
  • Groundskeeping responsibilities such as lawn mowing, whip-weeding, and snow shoveling.
  • Shipping/Receiving responsibilities such as delivering packages and assisting with office and furniture moves.
  • Serve as Electrical Helper by assisting electricians with lighting fixture replacements, providing tools, materials, and basic support.
  • Housekeeping duties: cleaning, office moves, light bulb replacement (requiring ladder use).
  • Operate appropriate machinery and equipment such as lawn mowers, whip-weeders, trucks, and power tools.
  • Work in full compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), related regulations, and all workplace health and safety practices as directed by the supervisor.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Grade 12 education.
  • Experience in grounds maintenance, shipping/receiving, and general maintenance work considered an asset.
  • Possession of a current and valid Class G2 driver’s license with a good driving record.
  • Current WHMIS certification, or ability to successfully complete the required training during the trial/probationary period.
  • Forklift certification considered an asset; alternatively, must be willing and able to complete certification during the trial/probationary period.
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) certification considered an asset; alternatively, must be willing and able to complete certification during the trial/probationary period.
  • Willingness and ability to complete other required training during the trial/probationary period.
  • Ability to follow both oral and written instructions accurately and efficiently.
  • Capable of meeting the physical demands of the position, including:
    • Performing heavy manual labor such as continuous gravel shoveling, loading and unloading materials (e.g., salt), and lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling heavy objects such as furnishings and barricades.
    • Lift up to 60 lbs. independently and assist with occasional heavy lifts such as steel bicycle racks, couches, and wooden bleachers.
    • Working safely on ladders and scaffolding at heights exceeding 10 feet.
    • Performing tasks requiring prolonged periods of overhead arm work.
  • General knowledge of standard practices, techniques, and safe work habits related to grounds maintenance, electrical work, and shipping/receiving operations, including traffic laws and defensive driving principles.
  • Familiarity with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), its regulations, and related health and safety standards.
  • Ability to operate position-related machinery and equipment, such as forklifts, tractors, and loaders.
  • Aptitude for performing general vehicle maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to interact courteously and professionally with staff, students, and the public.
