Role Overview
The Chief of Staff is the senior physician leader of the organization, appointed by and accountable to the Board of Directors, and serves as Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee. Working in close partnership with the President & Chief Executive Officer, the Chief of Staff provides strategic clinical leadership and serves as a key link between the Board, medical staff, and senior leadership team.
The role plays a critical part in advancing quality of care, patient safety, physician engagement, and clinical excellence across the organization. As a member of the senior leadership team, the Chief of Staff serves as a trusted advisor to the Board and senior leadership on matters related to clinical quality, professional practice, resource utilisation, and care delivery. The Chief of Staff will also support MAHC’s transformational capital redevelopment project and broader organisational change agenda, helping to engage physicians in planning discussions, advance innovative models of care, foster alignment across sites and clinical programs, and ensure clinical priorities inform future design and delivery of services across the organization.
The Chief of Staff fosters strong relationships with physicians, hospital leaders, and community partners while supporting a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement. The role provides leadership and oversight for medical staff credentialing, appointments and reappointments, performance management, professional development, and physician engagement. Working closely with Chiefs of Department and organisational leaders, the Chief of Staff helps ensure the effective organisation of clinical services and supports quality improvement initiatives across the organization.
Responsibilities
- Provide strategic clinical leadership and serve as the primary liaison between the Board, medical staff, and senior leadership team.
- Advise the Board and senior leadership on clinical quality, professional practice, resource utilisation, and care delivery.
- Lead the planning and execution of the strategic, clinical, and capital redevelopment initiatives.
- Oversee medical staff credentialing, appointments, performance management, professional development, and physician engagement.
- Foster collaboration and continuous improvement across clinical services.
Qualifications
- A respected physician leader with demonstrated experience in medical administration, physician engagement, quality and patient safety, and health system leadership.
- Experience leading change within complex healthcare environments and supporting organisational transformation.
- Exceptional communication and relationship‑building skills, sound judgement, and the ability to influence, build consensus, and lead through complexity.
- Collaborative leadership style, strategic mindset, and commitment to clinical excellence.
- Strong foundation in physician leadership and medical administration; formal leadership education, physician leadership development programmes, or equivalent leadership training considered an asset.
- Previous experience serving as a Department Chief, Medical Director, Chief of Staff, or other physician leadership capacities. Experience supporting medical education, research activities, or academic partnerships considered an asset.
