Malahat Nation represents approximately 350+ members with two reserve lands located on the western shore of Saanich Inlet, south of the village of Mill Bay, about 40-kilometres north of Victoria, British Columbia.

Malahat Nation has been dedicated to protecting and understanding the local marine environments since time immemorial and must be a part of building the understanding required to manage these valuable resources effectively. Malahat Nation is seeking a dedicated and hard-working Senior Guardian with experience working with Indigenous communities in Marine Stewardship initiatives. This position is ideal for you if you are an innovator able to engage in the community, you have a strong desire to make a difference in our community and a commitment to cultural safety that reflects Malahat values and Coast Salish teachings.

PURPOSE: Reporting to the Program Lead and in collaboration with other members of the Malahat Stewardship team, the successful applicant will assist with developing and operating the Malahat Guardian Program. The Senior Guardian will be responsible for overseeing vessel operations, conducting marine monitoring and data collection, and supporting cultural and harvest activities. This is a fulltime permanent position working in office, on land and water, with flexible work hours including some evenings and / or weekends as needed, with local to moderate travel required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Promote the values of Malahat Nation through collecting environmental data and observing the various industrial, commercial and recreational uses of the Salish Sea
• Oversee vessel management and maintenance activities, ensuring safe and efficient performance through effective captaincy and operational leadership.
• Assume responsibility for navigation, safe vessel handling, crew coordination, emergency procedures and operational readiness
• Conduct pre-departure inspections and ensure the vessel is operationally ready.
• Lead routine vessel maintenance to identify and coordinate required repairs when needed
• Plan and coordinate vessel trips in Malahat marine territory, considering weather, marine conditions, routes, fuel and operational requirements
• Provide direction and mentorship to Junior Guardians
• Ensures compliance with all applicable boating, safety, and emergency procedures and requirements.
• Participate in monitoring programs such as vessel traffic and species observations, cultural monitoring, biophysical and contaminant water sampling
• Participate in training and staff meetings as required
• Perform careful lab work, including using microscopes and non-harmful chemicals
• Accurately enter data and create digital maps
• Promote safety while working on commercial vessels
• Promote teamwork and good work ethics
• Work efficiently with other programs at Malahat Nation
• Help create a nurturing learning environment for other members of the team
• Maintain an open and positive attitude towards Indigenous culture and history
• Facilitate cultural and harvest activities
• Other duties as required

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Indigenous Perspective:

• Recognizes and respects all cultural diversity and has an understanding and respect for Malahat Nation culture

Western Ways:

• High School Diploma or equivalent and an acceptable combination of related education, training and experience; expressed interest in the fields of Natural Resources, GIS Mapping etc.
• Successful Criminal Record Check (CRC) required
• Class 5 BC Driver License is required

Must have or willing to obtain the following training and certifications (supports may be available):

• Small Vessel Operator Proficiency
• ROC-M (Restricted Operator's Certificate-Maritime Radio)
• MED A3 or SDVBS (Marine Emergency Certificate)
• Swiftwater Rescue
• Marine Basic First Aid
• WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)
• Familiarity with Provincial and Federal laws, regulations, and policies related to the environment, land, and natural resource management beneficial

Other:

• Natural Resource related training and/or diploma/certification is an asset
• Prior experience working as a Guardian is an asset

• Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite, email and using handheld devices
• Must be able to meet the physical demands of the jobs (physically fit and in good health)
• This position will require travel to various sites by vehicle, boat and/or air. Travel conditions will be variable due to inclement weather; willing and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions
• Willing to work outside of regular hours as needed
