Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Career Education & Operations and working closely with a team of full-time staff colleagues, the Specialist, Career Services & Employer Events provides essential support on campus in support of student employment outcomes.

Responsibilities

Student Employment Support & Employer Services:

• As the primary staff person in the Career Zone, ensure that an in-person drop-in service point at Thunder Bay campus is welcoming, inclusive, and supports a feeling of belonging for all students and members of Lakehead’s community, providing support via telephone, in person, and via email during Career Zone hours.
• Implement the daily operations of the Career Zone including maintaining the accessibility, cleanliness, and safety of the space and its equipment
• Personally provide knowledgeable and student-centred support to students developing essential employment readiness skills including job search strategies, resume & cover letter writing, and interview preparation.
• Amplify and extend available services for students at Thunder Bay campus by recruiting, training, and coaching a team of student volunteers to work in the Career Zone.
• Review, approve or decline job postings suggested for Lakehead’s digital and physical job board
• Embrace the opportunity to connect the Career Zone with other front-line service teams at Lakehead, communicating service hours and ensuring strong general awareness of the role of the Career Zone within the department’s services.

Event logistics:

• Help the team facilitate a full calendar of complex career-related events involving multiple partners (career fairs, networking nights, and more).
• Support logistics such as: creating room and space booking, creating and monitoring registration forms, developing materials for marketing and promotion of events to participants, confirming event schedules and floor plans, catering and parking arrangements, tracking event budgets, setting up and working at events, and providing ongoing coaching and guidance to students volunteering and/or participating in the events.

Community Engagement:

• Ensure that students are aware of and can access the many services and supports available at Lakehead in support of their career development. This encompasses:
• Developing and executing a comprehensive student communications and event marketing strategy to reach students via direct email marketing techniques, traditional print tactics, in person outreach, and outreach on various social media marketing channels (such as LinkedIn, Instagram, and departmental webpages etc.), and
• Using design software or collaborating with colleagues in marketing and within student affairs as needed to create print, digital or video content in support of the communications strategy while ensuring compliance with brand standards
• Actively supporting the planning and distribution of print and digital materials promoting extra-curricular career services events and supports.
• Representing the department on the student affairs marketing committee and other project teams as assigned, in order to share information and identify opportunities to collaborate across departments in support of the student experience.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Post-secondary degree or diploma in business, marketing, human resources, events coordination, liberal arts, social work, psychology, or any area leading to development of transferable skills and competencies relating to the position.
• A minimum of 2 years experience in a role with responsibility for event logistics & coordination, marketing, community engagement or other requirements of the position.
• Prior work experience within an employment services, human resources, or comparable business environment within a publicly funded or educational organization
• Must be willing to work a primarily in-person role working in an assigned campus location with minimal privacy and frequent interruptions.
• Exceptional customer service skills, solutions-oriented approach and genuine desire to contribute to the success of students, graduates, and community partners.
• Ability to speak with credibility when discussing potential career paths, understand and articulate connections between program outcomes and career options, and provide student-centred guidance regarding job search and resume writing strategies for students interested in working in diverse fields.
• Prior experience working with confidential information in a competitive landscape, and maintaining records within an enterprise CRM system.
• Excellent time management and organizational skills, with ability to move multiple projects forward simultaneously
• Proficient with Google Office Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, online meeting platforms such as Zoom, Teams, Google Meet
• Ability to work outside of regular business hours when required
• Demonstrated alignment with Lakehead’s commitment to truth and reconciliation, access, inclusion and belonging, and able to articulate how equity issues differ according to specific demographics and socio-economic barriers within a workplace or employment setting.

Additional Assets

• Teaching Certificate, or other evidence of being interested in supporting learners will be an indication of interest in working with this age group.
• Career Development Practitioner (CDP), Teaching and Training Adults (TATA) certificate, or other designation typically associated with career development professionals or adult educators an asset but not required for this role.
• Previous experience working in higher education or similarly client-focused publicly funded organization.
