JOB SUMMARY
As part of the interdisciplinary team at the T. Roy Adams Regional Centre for Dementia Care, responsible to develop, coordinate, implement, promote, and evaluate a diversified program of resident-focused recreational activities for residents/clients based on and responsive to their abilities, strengths, needs, interests, and former lifestyles. Works according to all applicable standards, acts and governing bodies.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
- Diploma or Degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies or Therapeutic Recreation
- Completed courses in special populations and therapeutic recreation
- Certificate in Dementia Care (or equivalent certificate course) from a recognized community college
- Valid First Aid certification
- Safe Food Handling preferred
- Certification in SAM S.T.E.P.S model of exercise preferred.
- Proof of training/certification within the past 2 years preferred in: U-first, PIECES, GPA, DementiAbility, and Positive Approaches to Care
KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE
- A minimum of 6 - 9 months current experience in the recreation field working with dementia populations, and with residents/clients exhibiting behaviours, preferably in a long-term care or community geriatric setting
- Knowledge of community resources
- Knowledge of and experience with Dementia Care and dealing with responsive behaviours preferred
- Knowledge of resident/client safety issues and demonstrated capacity to apply resident/client safety practices
- A strong background in long-term care, community consultation and geriatric mental health
- Experience in creating therapeutic care plans and progress notes
- DOS charting knowledge, including how to use the patterns to create a recreation intervention care plan
- Excellent theoretical knowledge and practiced skills in dementia care (specific to GPA techniques, DementiAbility strategies, using The PIECES model of care and Positive Approach to care strategies and therapeutic recreation)

- Commitment to client/family centred care and compassion for the client/family/population being served
- Ability to advocate (to families, other staff, other departments) for best practice when dealing with responsive behaviours
- Demonstrated leadership, collaboration and organizational skills
- Demonstrated adaptive communication skills
- Excellent computer knowledge and skill, e.g. Word, Outlook
- Ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team
- Commitment to continuous learning and development
- Enthusiasm, flexibility and ability to cope with change
- Must have an excellent rapport with elderly people and special populations
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
- In accordance with the Corporate Policy and applicable Legislation/Regulation(s), the position requires the incumbent to undergo a Police Record Check and submit a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check, as well as complete any subsequent declaration or check as required by legislation/Act, regulation, and/or policy
- Compliance with any requirements, including immunization and screening measures, of the infection prevention and control program as required by applicable legislation/Act, regulation or policy; some measures are only recommendations (not requirements)
- Staff are required to be screened for Tuberculosis in accordance with the applicable legislation/Act
- Good attendance record
- Physically and mentally capable of performing the duties of the job
Shift Information
Currently scheduled 40 hours evenings shifts, may be required to work days, evenings and nights including weekends.
