Senior Engineer, Rock Mechanics, 10+ years

Role Overview

As a senior engineer in rock mechanics, you’ll apply sound rock mechanic principles to surface mining, underground mining, and civil construction.

Type of position: Regular

Responsibilities

  • Apply rock mechanics across a range of activities, including field mapping, geotechnical core logging, rock mass characterization, rock stability assessments, and reinforcement design.
  • Coordinate and manage geotechnical site investigations, field activities, and laboratory material testing; prepare technical reports.
  • Review and supervise civil and geotechnical construction activities.
  • Perform terrain and slope hazard assessments, mapping and reporting.
  • Carry out geotechnical engineering analyses, including slope stability, seepage, and deformation analysis.
  • Work with multidisciplinary project teams and ensure the technical quality of deliverables.
  • Mentor junior technical personnel.
  • Travel to project sites within Canada and occasionally overseas.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Degree in engineering geology, geotechnical engineering, mining engineering, or related field; postgraduate degree or relevant mine operations experience is an advantage.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.).
  • Over 10 years of relevant professional geotechnical engineering experience.
  • Strong academic background and solid understanding of rock mechanics.
  • Advanced expertise in numerical modelling using software such as Rocscience suite, FLAC3D, and other geotechnical analysis tools.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, technical writing experience, and presentation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well with a team.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to project sites; valid driver’s licence required.
  • Advanced English skills to facilitate collaboration with other BBA offices and/or clients in English‑speaking Canadian provinces and internationally; you may need to use English occasionally or daily, depending on current projects.
  • Advanced French skills to facilitate collaboration with other BBA offices and/or clients in Québec.
  • Asset: background in soil mechanics.
