Youth Care Counsellor - Relief Awake Overnight

As an Awake Overnight Care Counsellor , you will remain awake and actively available throughout your shift to supervise and support youth, respond to their needs, maintain a safe environment, and ensure continuity of care. You will work as part of a close-knit team dedicated to helping youth develop the skills they need to thrive.

This role is ideal for individuals passionate about Child and Youth Care, Human Services, Social Work, Youth Support, Trauma-Informed Care, Residential Group Care, Mental Health, Behavioural Support, Family Support, and Community Services.

What We're Looking For:

• Warm, caring individuals who can form strong, supportive relationships with youth from diverse and often disadvantaged backgrounds and histories. We are looking for mentors who can help youth feel safe, valued, and supported.


• Individuals with post-secondary education. We most often hire candidates with diplomas or degrees in Child and Youth Care, Social Work, or related Human Services fields.
  


• Individuals who work well in a team environment and are committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of youth.


• Employees with strong workplace skills, including effective communication, good writing skills, punctuality, the ability to use workplace technology, and a strong sense of responsibility and professionalism.


• Individuals who are comfortable working awake overnight shifts and who can remain alert, attentive, and responsive throughout the night.


• Individuals who are physically able to perform the duties of the role, including working overnight shifts, climbing stairs in the group home, completing household management tasks, and responding appropriately to the needs of youth.


• Individuals who understand the concepts that are important to us, including trauma-informed care, strength-based approaches, Indigenous worldviews, child and youth development, child-parent attachment, and the therapeutic milieu of group care .

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide active supervision and support to youth throughout the overnight shift.


• Remain awake and alert for the duration of the shift.


• Respond appropriately to youth needs, concerns, and unexpected situations during the night.


• Maintain a safe, secure, and supportive environment within the group home.


• Support youth with routines and individual needs as required.


• Monitor the home and ensure safety procedures are followed.


• Complete required documentation, shift notes, and communication regarding significant events or concerns.


• Communicate relevant information to the incoming staff team to support continuity of care.


• Complete appropriate household and cleaning duties during overnight hours.


• Follow individual care plans, agency policies, procedures, and safety protocols.


• Work collaboratively with the Care Counsellor team and other Chimo staff.

Qualifications & Requirements:

• Level 2: Degree in Child and Youth Care, Social Work, Human Services, or a related field.


• Level 1: Diploma in Child and Youth Care, Social Work, Human Services, or a related field.


• A clear and current Criminal Record Check (issued within the last six months).


• A clear and current Children's Services Intervention Record Check.


• Availability and willingness to accept relief awake overnight shifts, including weekends and holidays, based on program needs.


• Strong communication, observation, documentation, and interpersonal skills.


• Ability to respond calmly and appropriately to challenging or unexpected situations.


• If your degree was obtained from an international institution, you will be required to provide an  IQAS Assessment (International Qualifications Assessment Service) .

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.


• Ability to physically interact with and support youth when required.


• Ability to climb stairs and perform household duties within the group home.


• Ability to remain awake, alert, and responsive throughout overnight shifts.
